Following DirectTV’s pledge and execution on dropping the state-funded “news” station earlier this week, Russia Today (RT) told staff that they would experience a “permanent” “layoff” as the network “ceasing production” in a couple of months. That, according to CNN media beat writer Oliver Darcy, who obtained an internal memo announcing the move to staff.

And, at 1:00 p.m. Eastern, they made good on their promise, roughly 45 minutes after Axios’s Sara Fischer broke the news.

DirecTV dropped Russian propaganda outlet RT America on Tuesday as a belated response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. DirecTV absurdly refused to renew One America News Network earlier this year while RT’s programming was only suspended after Russia invaded Ukraine.

On Tuesday morning, the news broke: DirectTV was FINALLY dropping Russian propaganda outfit RT (formerly known as Russia Today). With that, we ask: what took so long? During the invasion of Ukraine, the network has been spewing a steady stream of lies that blame the Ukrainian people for being invaded, ridiculous spin about saving the country from phantom Nazis and other falsehoods. 

On Monday, TheBlaze writer Carlos Garcia reported: “A media reporter who works for Russian state-owned media angrily denounced Twitter for adding a label proclaiming the affiliation to her tweets, and she saw swift backlash online.” He proceeded to highlight how the host was dragged on the social media platform for complaining about the accurate label.

Russian state-affiliated accounts on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are still allowed to influence their approximately 38.7 million followers even as Russia attacks Ukraine.

Thursday night on NewsNation, primetime host Dan Abrams pulled back the curtain on the abject sham and disgustingly pro-Kremlin RT, a so-called news outlet that’s spent 17 years spewing Russian propaganda and doing Vladimir Putin’s bidding seeking to expand his influence and splinter the west.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump remains banned from the social media platforms for allegedly encouraging violence.

Facebook has said that its fact-checkers are selected and certified through a so-called “non-partisan” organization. That’s not true. It was recently revealed that a prominent staffer is openly biased and supports former Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
