Relieved Nets Cheer Biden Foreign Trip: ‘Era of Donald Trump is Over’

June 14th, 2021 3:09 PM

On Monday, the network morning shows shamelessly swooned over President Biden’s ongoing foreign trip, hailing the junket as a sign “that the era of Donald Trump is over.” The Democrat’s adoring fan base in the media further cheered Biden being “on a mission” to “restore relationships” with U.S. allies in the wake of Trump.

“So much of this first foreign trip for President Biden has been really about trying to convince allies that the era of Donald Trump is over,” correspondent Cecilia Vega proudly announced at the top of a live report from Brussels, Belgium during ABC’s Good Morning America. She giddily touted how the differences between the two administrations “are on full display here this morning in these meetings under way right now.”

Vega further gushed: “This morning, President Biden in Brussels, where he will try to convince NATO leaders that America wants to be a partner, following four years of President Trump bashing the alliance.”

Leading off CBS This Morning, co-host Anthony Mason declared: “We begin with President Biden’s visit to Brussels today to meet with our NATO allies. He says the U.S. is back in the business of leading the world.” Continuing to parrot White House talking points, the anchor assured viewers that Biden has “also been drawing a stark contrast with the America First stance of his predecessor.”

Reporting from Brussels, correspondent Ed O’Keefe emphasized: “The President’s hoping to build on what he called a series of productive meetings at the G7 over the weekend in England as he tries to restore relationships with NATO allies after four years of a frayed relationship with the last administration.” A soundbite followed moments later of Biden proclaiming: “America is back at the table.”

While repeating the story at the top of 8:00 a.m. ET hour, Mason asked: “President Biden is really on a mission to strengthen relationships with allies after they were strained during the previous administration, isn’t he?” O’Keefe affirmed: “He sure is....President Biden today is trying to reassure NATO allies after, let’s say, a frayed relationship over the last four years with the last president...”

“President Biden’s arrival here at NATO today marks an American reset of sorts,” correspondent Peter Alexander asserted during his report from Brussels for NBC’s Today show. “The President already this morning touting this transatlantic alliance as vital while former President Trump in the past threatened to quit the group,” the reporter added. Alexander reiterated Biden presenting a “stark contrast to his predecessor, who criticized NATO nations for over-relying on the U.S., labeling the decades-old security alliance obsolete.”

Early in the 8:00 a.m. ET hour, chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell even took a jab at Trump while touting Biden having tea with the Queen:

It was a dazzling afternoon for tea at Windsor Castle. Queen Elizabeth II hosting President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at Windsor, the nearly thousand-year-old castle where she has spent much of her time since the pandemic. The pageantry fit for a queen, or in this case, a president. The President taking part in an inspection of the guard of honor. This time, no obvious hiccups.

At the mention of past “hiccups,” footage appeared on screen of Trump previously meeting the monarch.

It’s the job of journalists report on events, it’s not their job to root for a president of a particular party by declaring that they’re ending the “era” of another president.

This blatant cheerleading for Biden was brought to ABC viewers by Cadillac, to CBS viewers by Progressive, and to NBC viewers by Subway. You can fight back by letting these advertisers know what you think of them sponsoring such content.

CECILIA VEGA: So much of this first foreign trip for President Biden has been really about trying to convince allies that the era of Donald Trump is over. These differences, they are on full display here this morning in these meetings under way right now. President Trump, he said NATO was obsolete. Just a few minutes ago, President Biden said these NATO alliances are a sacred obligation.

This morning, President Biden in Brussels, where he will try to convince NATO leaders that America wants to be a partner, following four years of President Trump bashing the alliance.

JOE BIDEN: NATO is critically important for U.S. interests, in and of itself.

VEGA: On the agenda, ensuring stability in Afghanistan after U.S. and NATO forces withdraw by September 11th, climate change, and Russia. President Biden says he and Vladimir Putin do agree on one thing, relations between the two countries are at rock bottom.

BIDEN: Let me make it clear, I think he’s right that it’s a low point.

VEGA: And now, new details about that high-stakes summit, it will be split into two sessions, and unlike that shocking moment following President Trump’s meeting where he held a joint press conference and told the world he trusted Putin’s election interference denials over his intelligence community’s findings...

DONALD TRUMP [JULY 2018]: He just said it’s not Russia. I will say this, I don’t see any reason why it would be.

VEGA: President Biden says he’ll be alone at his press conference.

ANTHONY MASON: We begin with President Biden’s visit to Brussels today to meet with our NATO allies. He says the U.S. is back in the business of leading the world. The President spent the last few days in Cornwall, England, at the G7 Summit, securing international cooperation on COVID and China, among other issues. He’s also been drawing a stark contrast with the America First stance of his predecessor. Ed O’Keefe is in Brussels. Ed, what’s the President hoping to accomplish there?

ED O’KEEFE: Well, good morning, Anthony, from Brussels. The President’s hoping to build on what he called a series of productive meetings at the G7 over the weekend in England as he tries to restore relationships with NATO allies after four years of a frayed relationship with the last administration. Mr. Biden’s no stranger to these world gatherings, but for the first time he’s getting top billing at series high-stakes meetings and summits here in Europe.

JOE BIDEN: America is back at the table.

O’KEEFE: President Biden is continuing his first international trip as commander in chief, with plans to reaffirm America’s commitment to NATO.

BIDEN: We believe that NATO is vital to our ability to maintain American security for the next – the remainder of the century.

O’KEEFE: On the ambitious agenda today, the security implications of climate change, cyberattacks and disinformation, terrorism, nuclear deterrents, NATO’s role in the resource-rich and rapidly melting Arctic Ocean, the rise of China, and Russia’s aggressive actions, especially against Ukraine.

MASON: Ed O’Keefe is in Brussels. Ed, good morning again. President Biden is really on a mission to strengthen relationships with allies after they were strained during the previous administration, isn’t he?

O’KEEFE: He sure is.

(...)

O’KEEFE: Look, President Biden today is trying to reassure NATO allies after, let’s say, a frayed relationship over the last four years with the last president, who was quite critical of many member nations who didn’t properly budget for their militaries, at least in his view.

PETER ALEXANDER: President Biden’s arrival here at NATO today marks an American reset of sorts. The President already this morning touting this transatlantic alliance as vital while former President Trump in the past threatened to quit the group. Still these leaders face some serious challenges that they need to confront, from a rising China to a more aggressive Russia.

President Biden at his first NATO Summit looking to send a clear message to America’s allies that the U.S. will have their backs.

JOE BIDEN: NATO is critically important for U.S. interests in and of itself. If there weren’t one, we’d have to invent one.

ALEXANDER: A stark contrast to his predecessor, who criticized NATO nations for over-relying on the U.S., labeling the decades-old security alliance obsolete. The President, behind closed doors here, expected to consult the U.S.’s partners before Wednesday’s high-stakes summit with Vladimir Putin.
