After arguing students should be denied college admission based off of their race, the women at The View went on to argue students should be denied their Second Amendment rights as well. The rants were in response to a 2016 law passed in Texas that allows licensed gun owning students to conceal carry on campus. The law went into effect on community college campuses this week in the state.
While libertarian co-host Jedediah Bila delivered a reasoned and fact-based argument in favor of the law, the rest of the panel shut her down and spewed nonsense in order to further their gun control agenda.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg introduced the topic before asking the rest of the panel their thoughts. Bila was the first to respond, praising the move as giving students protection from being “sitting ducks” when "lunatics" come in to shoot up their school. Bila also made the point that shooters often target “gun-free zones” so this law combats that:
I love this story. I'm not a gun owner. I spend a lot of time with gun owners and spent a lot of time in Texas. When you study these shootings, what you find out is a lot of the lunatics, these maniacs target gun-free zones. The Aurora shooter, who went in and shot up that movie theater, that Batman movie, he went and specifically went out of region because all of the theaters around him closest to him, people were allowed to carry -- they were conceal-carry. They were allowed to have their firearm. He went to a theater that had a sign out front that declared it was a gun-free zone. You see it all the time. I mean there’s stats upon stats. The Crime Prevention Research Center, came up with a stat, that over 98% of mass shootings occur in gun-free zones. So I want those student who have a license to carry, who have gone through the process, who have been approved to not be sitting ducks in those classes.
During this rant, the others on the panel grew visibly irritated. “Oh my God,” Joy Behar groaned, as Bila brought up the gun-free zones statistic and Sara Haines tried to interrupt. But Whoopi got the first word in.
“What process?” Whoopi asked. “Gone through which process?” she repeated.
“They’re licensed. They have a gun license,” Bila responded.
“Yes but you do know that to get a gun license you don't actually have to learn how to shoot the gun?” Whoopi said with a smirk on her face as she chuckled.
Clearly shocked by what Whoopi claimed, Bila asked for clarification:
“To get a gun license? Everyone I know who has a gun license has gone through extensive shooting training,” she added.
As is the usual exchange after Bila makes a valid point, Whoopi argued, “Well, that may be true for you, but it’s not true for everyone else:”
“You, you may have done it. But I'm telling you people can go and buy guns and never ever have to go to a gun range. They can have them in the house,” Whoopi argued.
Co-host Joy Behar then interrupted to give her own statistics provided by the show's producers:
I have a statistic here. That our crack research team came up with. Of 160 active shooter situations between 2000 and 2013, the FBI found only one case where an armed civilian intervened to stop an attack and that guy was a Marine. In 21 of these cases, an unarmed civilian interrupted the attack and restrained the gunman. Statistically you are more likely to kill another civilian or yourself with a gun. That is part of the insanity going on in this country right now.
Co-host Sara Haines jumped in to also attack Bila’s points:
The Aurora shooting specifically always bothered me because what she brought up always bothered me because people said if there were more people with guns. The last thing you need in a dark theater with adrenaline pumping, is a bunch of people popping up armed because when someone comes to save the day who are they going to shoot at, anyone with a gun. You're shooting at people.
“What about the professors who give you an F? I would be scared to teach in that class!” Behar gushed.
Bila tried to respond to their points quickly but was cut off by Whoopi for commercial break. As usual they did not return to the topic.
BILA: This requires that you waive -- I'm not undermining campus security. And police do their job. But why should a citizen who has gone through background checks, who has gone through the proper protocol, why should they be sitting there in that classroom if they have gone through the process, every single person I know--
HOSTIN: Jed. More guns---
WHOOPI: We have to come back.
Each state has their own rules and regulations to obtain a license to carry, but at least in the state of Texas training is required to obtain a license. If the View producers had even a smidgen of integrity, they would’ve had Whoopi make a correction in the next segment.
