Should the Pope Resign?

August 30th, 2018 4:42 PM
WASHINGTON — Many years ago, in the early 1980s, I was drawn ever so transiently into the bureaucratic intricacies of the Roman Catholic Church in America. There was a saintly priest at Indiana University, Rev. James Higgins, who was driven from the university's Newman Center to a parish some 20 miles away from campus. The archbishop of Indianapolis replaced him with two utter lightweights.

The Catholic Church Sex Abuse Scandal

August 30th, 2018 4:30 PM
Sexual scandals and inappropriate behavior are as old as the Bible. I give you (1 Corinthians 5:1) in which Paul writes: “It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father's wife.” In more modern times, there have been sex scandals involving TV evangelists from Aimee Semple McPherson in the '20s to…

The network that, for years, employed alleged sexual harassers Charlie Rose and CEO Les Moonves decided to lecture Americans on Friday about “doing the right thing when nobody is watching.” CBS This Morning co-host and Obama donor Gayle King was particularly sanctimonious, despite the fact that she once complained about having to cover the allegations against “my friend” Rose.

Early Friday, NewsBusters reported that CNN spent only one minute of airtime on the recanting of a former Ohio State University wrestler’s allegations against Ohio Republican Congressman Jim Jordan. After reviewing coverage of the original NBC article which leveled the claims against Jordan, NewsBusters found that there was a massive discrepancy in reporting.

Psst. Want to hear a joke? How about the one where Hillary Clinton -- you know, the woman who wasn’t going to “Stand By Her Man” until she did and enabled her husband’s sexual abuse and philandering -- claimed to be a women’s rights advocate? Hilarious, isn’t it? While a joke for sensible people, Hillary has been quite insistent that she stands on the shoulders of the giants of the women’s…

On Thursday, all three network morning shows promoted the conspiracy theory that the arrest of porn star Stormy Daniels at an Ohio strip club for misdemeanor sex offences was a “politically motivated” “sting operation” designed to embarrass the adult film actress, who accused President Trump of having an affair with her in 2006. The NBC, ABC, and CBS broadcasts all touted such claims from Daniels…

The 17-year-long war in Afghanistan continues, with nearly 15,000 U.S. troops currently deployed to support the fight against Taliban and ISIS forces, but you’d barely know it from watching any of the three broadcast network evening newscasts. The three newscasts combined have aired barely 32 minutes on the war this year, or a paltry one-third of one percent of their total evening news airtime.

Sudden Media Respect for Mark Sanford as He Loses in S.C. GOP Primary

June 13th, 2018 7:47 PM
The press is simplistically treating South Carolina Congressman Mark Sanford's Tuesday Republican primary loss as exemplifying the price one pays if one doesn't learn, per the Associated Press, "not to cross (President Donald) Trump." A closer look at Sanford's history illustrates that this is a classic case of sudden media respect which ignores why Sanford was so vulnerable.

Tensions were high on Thursday’s Deadline: White House as host Nicolle Wallace and her outraged panel fumed over Rudy Giuliani’s recent remarks about porn star Stormy Daniels. As the MSNBC host's frustration boiled over, she speculated whether the women in the Trump family were, “numb,” “dead inside,” or “paid off.”
