IN-KIND: The CNN-Jubilee Town Hall Was a Glorified Talarico Infomercial

October 15th, 2026 2:32 AM

CNN advertised its Jubilee-branded town hall with Texas Democrat Senate nominee James Talarico as an opportunity to engage and ask tough questions. To be sure, there were compelling questions from the audience. But Talarico was given such a wide berth with no resistance or fact-checking that one wonders what the going rate for CNN prime time is given that he just ran what amounted to an infomercial.

The event began with moderator Erin Burnett asking Talarico super-tough questions such as how he is feeling and asking him to clarify his bout with the flu. He wasn’t pressed about his absence. Burnett was there to facilitate. Compare that to the treatment of conservatives in similar situations, who would have been grilled under similar circumstances.

The event was divided in two: the traditional CNN candidate town hall, and the Jubilee-style mano-a-mano. The first question was pretty much reflective of how the town hall would go:

The next question was about health care, which prompted a strategic cry from Talarico:

Burnett tried to confront Talarico on a past controversial quote, but to little avail- which triggered a memorable Scott Jennings quote later in the evening. No follow-up from Burnett.

After a question on fair elections, Talarico smeared ICE and called for mass amnesty for illegal aliens.

This led to the one-on-one Jubilee portion of the program. First up: a Catholic theological professor who engaged Talarico on abortion.

The next audience member confronts Talarico on national debt. Talarico responds with a call for tax increases. A conservative Christian woman then confronts Talarico on some of his more controversial statements. Talarico apologizes and works back to his theologies.

After a question on Ukraine, Talarico is confronted from the left on trans surgeries for kids.

A retired Navy Chief asks Talarico about the Save America Act. He professes not to know what that is (later proven to be false), and talks about supporting “Fair Voter ID”, such as a student ID that anyone can get.

A rabbi asked Talarico about his position on Israel. Talarico signaled empathy before parroting Hamas talking points.

The forum ended with questions on home ownership, Super Intelligence, and data centers.

At that point, the panels took over. During the first, fronted by Kaitlan Collins, we saw conservative reaction that immediately established how much of a free pass this event was for Talarico. Shermichael Singleton makes the point that Talarico had ample opportunity to flip-flop on issues without being challenged.

David Urban specifically called out the lack of fact-checking. Regrettably, Daniel Dale only appears to pop out of his box of Tim Horton’s for President Trump.

Kaitlan Collins gave way to Abby Phillip, who did a segment or two on the forum before going back to a normal NewsNight. But not without Scott Jennings giving us the quote of the evening.

The Talarico forum at CNN was little more than an extended campaign infomercial, which he might as well report as an in-kind donation. We are reminded yet again that if it weren’t for double standards, there’d be none at all.
