How Stupid! CNN Claims ‘Good News’ of Falling Prices ‘Might Be for Bad Reasons’

CNN has a weird obsession with making itself look completely stupid by trying to stoke bad vibes whenever it has to report on any good news that can somehow benefit President Donald Trump.  Instead of just reporting the straight news on price pressure relief for American consumers, CNN reporter Matt Egan instead chose May 14 to run one of the dumbest Tasmanian Devil spin headlines yet, “Good news! Prices are falling. But it might be for bad reasons.” Uh, what!

The Labor Department’s recently released inflation report showed a welcome unexpected slowdown in the increase of consumer prices against economists’ expectations. This was bolstered by the biggest monthly decline in grocery prices since September 2020 largely attributable to a whopping 12.4 percent decline in the retail price of eggs.

Yet, Egan, who is notorious for being a hapless Bidenomics simp, began his piece by noting that “The lowest inflation rate in four-years was made possible by a trend that will surely bring smiles to the faces of Americans: Falling prices.” Then came his absurd spin: “But not all price drops are created equal. Some of the good inflation news might be happening for a bad reason: a weakening economy.”

This is like saying, “You shouldn’t really be happy you’re paying less because of an arbitrary doomism theory we have about why your grocery bill just got smaller.” But what more should we expect from Egan? This was the same schlub who in 2024 was waving around leftist economists to cry “that the Trump agenda could actually make inflation worse.”

Well, the recent report showed the opposite even with some of Trump’s tariffs already being in place, so Egan predictably had to flip the script and make it look like softening inflation was just as bad as worsening inflation just to ding Trump’s policies: “[M]any economists worry the subdued inflation readings won’t last because of the trade war,” Egan belched. One of the sub-points he zeroed in on from economist Marco Casiraghi was that the recent numbers simply reflected the so-called “‘calm before the storm.”’

Newsflash Egan: This is scareporn propaganda, not news.

Watch CNN Reporter Matt Egan declare Trump’s agenda would worsen inflation in 2024, while Bidenomics was still running amok (June 26, 2024).

It didn’t help Egan’s narrative any that the Labor Department would release its report on producer prices a day after his story went live showing a massive 0.5 percent drop against economists’ expectations of a 0.3 percent increase. The Daily Wire noted that the producer price drop “marks the first time the Producer Price Index declined since October 2023.” No worries, Egan will probably find a way to spin that news too.

This is just the latest example of CNN not being willing to give Trump an inch even at the cost of looking imbecilic. CNN Business Executive Editor David Goldman also reported on the good consumer price news, but injected a hefty amount of oxymoronic reasoning just to maintain the notion that Trump was still somehow lying about tumbling egg prices even though his argument eventually turned out to be true. His ridiculous headline spoke for itself: “Trump’s egg price fiction has suddenly become reality.”

CNN just makes our jobs at NewsBusters way too easy.
