Apparently Ann Romney believed that no one was going to call Democrats and the press onto the carpet over their disgraceful conduct and non-reaction, respectively, after South Carolina Democratic gubernatorial candidate Vincent Sheheen called incumbent Palmetto State Governor Nikki Haley a "whore" — and failed to "apologize" for it for four days.
Mrs. Romney, sadly, is presumptively correct. Searches indicate that the Associated Press still has no national or regional story on what Sheheen said ("we're gonna escort whore out the door"). She correctly asserts that "if a Republican had said this, it would be blowing up in their face like nobody's business." For those who haven't seen it, the Sheheen video, along with excerpts from coverage at Charleston's Post and Courier, follow the jump.
First, the video from Thursday evening:
As the Washington Free Beacon originally reported on Friday (bolds are mine throughout this post):
Vincent Sheheen on Nikki Haley: ‘We’re Gonna Escort Whore Out the Door’
South Carolina Democrat and 2014 gubernatorial candidate Vincent Sheheen called Republican Governor Nikki Haley a “whore” with a smile, some laughs, and finger-pointing during an event in Florence, S.C., on Thursday.
“That is the worst kind of politics, and we’re gonna escort whore out the door,” Sheheen said. “We’re gonna escort her out the door.”
Sheheen quickly corrected himself, but began cackling after members of the crowd began laughing. He scanned the crowd for approval and apparently found some.
... The crowd was visibly riled up, and Sheheen seemed pleased with his “whore” comment, even if it was just a Freudian slip.
Now to the Post and Courier coverage:
Ann Romney hits on media, Sheheen in "W-bomb" aftermath
Republicans, including Ann Romney, are expressing outrage at Democratic gubernatorial candidate Vincent Sheheen's drop of the "W bomb" in reference to Gov. Nikki Haley, saying there is a double standard in the media.
"It's so upsetting when you know someone can say something like that about a woman, and not have any kind of reaction. It's so unacceptable," Romney, wife of former GOP presidential candidate Mitch Romney, said in a media release.
... A video taken at the time shows Sheheen saying "We are going to escort whore out the door."
He quickly corrected himself to say "We're going to escort her out the door." Sheheen shows a grin of embarassment as well, as the crowd reacts in laughter.
Republicans on Tuesday said the slur was on par with Democrats declaring war on women.
... Romney added "You get so sick of saying there is bias out there, but if a Republican had said this, it would be blowing up in their face like nobody's business."
At the Washington Post, Mrs. Romney is quoted as asking, "Where is EMILY's List? Where is NOW? Where are they?" The answer, ma'am is that they're too busy attacking prolife Republicans and conservatives to be bothered with expressing outrage over genuinely sexist behavior by the people they back.
Also at WaPo:
Ann Romney, who is one of Haley's biggest champions, told CNN that the comment "hit me right in my gut." She added: "We need to make sure we have a safe place so that other women can feel like they can do this and these kinds of things aren't going to happen to them.
Part of the reason the left and its supportive press ignore these items specifically to discourage Republican and conservative women from entering politics in the first place. So "these kinds of things" are going to keep on heppening.
Predictably, coverage of Mrs. Romney's pushback is very light at 15 Google News results.
