Saturday demonstrated a staggering disparity in how media view those involved in the Gulf Coast oil spill cleanup.
While news outlets heaped scorn upon beleaguered BP CEO Tony Hayward for attending a yacht race in England Saturday, there was no such anger shown towards President Obama and Vice President Biden for going golfing.
In fact, as this Reuters piece illustrated, despite what our Commander-in-Chief was doing, it was perfectly acceptable for his administration to criticize Hayward's recreational exploits on his day off (h/t Hot Air headlines):
The White House renewed its sharp criticism of BP Plc CEO Tony Hayward after he attended a yacht race off the English coast on Saturday as his company struggles to plug its huge Gulf of Mexico oil leak.
"This has just been part of a long line of PR gaffes and mistakes," White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said in an interview taped for ABC's "This Week" week program, referring to Hayward.
Sheila Williams, a spokeswoman for the British energy giant, said Hayward attended the boat race at the Isle of Wight, saying he was spending some time with his teenage son after devoting most of the past two months away from family. [...]
"Well, to quote Tony Hayward, he's got his life back, as he would say," Emanuel said, commenting on his attendance at the yacht race. "And I think we can all conclude that Tony Hayward is not going to have a second career in PR consulting."
Makes you wonder if ABC's Jake Tapper asked Emanuel about the President and Vice President's golf outing Saturday.
Regardless, according to Google News, besides Reuters, the Associated Press, USA Today, the New York Times, NPR.com, CBSNews.com, and ABCNews.com have all informed their readers about Hayward's race attendance Saturday.
Yet, from what I can tell, only The Hill has reported Obama and Biden going golfing:
President Barack Obama hit the golf course Saturday with Vice President Joe Biden.
The White House pool report noted that Obama left at about 1 p.m. for the course at Andrews Air Force base, and his golfing parters [sic] included White House Trip Director Marvin Nicholson and photographer David Katz.
So Hayward, who was officially relieved of his duties concerning the spill cleanup Friday, is a despicable, heartless cad for going to a yacht race upon his return to England.
But our President -- who according to the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 is INDEED considered by American law responsible for overseeing this cleanup -- as oil continues to flow into the Gulf of Mexico can do whatever he wants on Saturday without a care that his adoring press might treat him similarly.
These folks don't even see the irony in the White House pointing fingers at Hayward's so-called insensitivity as the President and Vice President play another round of golf.
It really makes you wonder how these so-called journalists can look themselves in the mirror when they brush their teeth in the morning, doesn't it?
