The View hosts opened Thursday’s show taking shots at Senator Tim Scott [R-SC] for daring to criticize the left’s race-baiting narrative.
After his post-Biden speech rebuttal last night, liberals on Twitter and even journalists on television responded to his words with venomous racist slurs and attacks. Liberal View hosts Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin also were angry at the Republican for not calling America a racist country.
Playing a small snippet from his speech, Whoopi Goldberg responded scornfully, “Joy, what country is Tim Scott living in?”
Scoffing, Behar said, “I don’t know,” before laying into Scott, first for his “obsession” with Biden delivering on his promise of bipartisanship:
The bipartisanship is an obsession with the Republicans right now, that Biden is not reaching across the aisle, okay? And yet, when he says, Biden, we're on track to cutting child poverty in half and you look around the chamber and nobody on the Republican side is standing or clapping. Does that mean they're for child poverty? When he says he wants clean water and Kevin McCarthy is sitting on his hands and not reacting, does Kevin McCarthy like dirty water? Maybe he should campaign on that. Dirty water for everybody.
The white liberal host then lectured the black conservative on why he was wrong about America’s racism:
Now, Tim Scott, he does not seem to understand -- and a lot of them don't seem to understand the difference between a racist country and systemic -- systemic racism. They don't seem to get the difference. Yes, maybe it's not a racist country. Maybe Americans, the majority, are not racist. But we live in a country with systemic racism. We discussed it this week already, about housing and education and all the things important to people. And um, the fact that Tim Scott cannot acknowledge this is appalling. How can you go out there and say that when you just said two minutes ago you were the object and the victim of discrimination? Then he says this is not a racist country. At least acknowledge there is systemic racism. That's what I wanted to hear from him and he didn't say it.
Sunny Hostin was also "disappointed" by Scott's stance, narrowly avoiding calling him a "prop":
I was very disappointed in Tim Scott saying that -- using these buzz words like socialism. Saying things like you shouldn't really teach white children about racism because it makes them feel like oppressors, um that sort of -- this Republican ideology right now. I was disappointed that he said America is not a racist country without also talking about the systemic racism that is plaguing this country. I mean why was he chosen to give this rebuttal? He was chosen because he is the only black Republican senator. He is that person. He is the person that Republicans want to put out front because of the problem of racism in this country and he knows that. So I was sort of disappointed that he was used in this way and didn't take that opportunity to address that type of -- this type of issue head on. That was a disappointment to me.
Whoopi Goldberg added that, “it would be nice if he could have said, you know what, I don't believe the country is entirely racist, but we have some issues we have to deal with. That would have been made me feel better.”
When it was Meghan McCain’s turn to respond she railed against Biden for selling himself as a moderate but delivering a very progressive speech. “He's going to be the most Progressive president of my lifetime. It's very disappointing to the people who voted for him in running as a centrist,” she complained. McCain also blasted liberals for attacking the black Republican with racist slurs:
He explained policy reasons why he's a Republican. In response, he was trending on Twitter being called uncle Tom and uncle Tim which many Americans consider a racial slur. It's okay to be racist and use racial slurs towards black men as long as they are Republicans. I'm disgusted by the response to him…. the way he is being talked about, the way he's being disrespected, don't talk to me about microaggressions and race in this country. Don't talk to me about the problems we have in this country with racism when it's okay to speak and treat a black man this way who happens to be the most famous Republican black senator in the country…

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Joy, what country is Tim Scott living in? What is --
JOY BEHAR: [laughs] I don't know.
GOLDBERG: What are your big takeaways from last night?
BEHAR: I have two things. One, he's talking about railing against -- I mean, he's talking about not playing bipartisanship. The bipartisanship is an obsession with the Republicans right now, that Biden is not reaching across the aisle, ok?And yet, when he says, Biden, we're on track to cutting child poverty in half and you look around the chamber and nobody on the Republican side is standing or clapping. Does that mean they're for child poverty? When he says he wants clean water and Kevin McCarthy is sitting on his hands and not reacting, does Kevin Mccarthy like dirty water? Maybe he should campaign on that. Dirty water for everybody.
The other thing I have to say is, I thought it was brilliant -- I thought Biden was incredibly warm and presidential and great. To see those two beautiful, intelligent brilliant women behind him makes me feel like a real -- I just felt wonderful.
Now, Tim Scott, he does not seem to understand -- and a lot of them don't seem to understand the difference between a racist country and a systemic -- systemic racism.
WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Right. Sunny, what struck you about both Biden's speech and the response from Tim Scott?
SUNNY HOSTIN: Well, you know, it struck me that Biden's speech was certainly presidential. He showed warmth. He showed caring. He was inspirational. We haven't seen that kind of speech in four years. So I was really enamored of that. 85% of Americans who watched the speech also were. They approved of his speech. I fought that his plan for America, his plan for free community college was right on message. I was disappointed that I didn't hear more about student loan forgiveness because there are -- student loans are crippling people. I was also really happy that he called out white supremacy. He clearly said that white supremacy is -- our intelligence agencies have determined that white supremacy is terrorizing our country. That is just the truth of it.
I was very disappointed in Tim Scott saying that -- using these buzz words like socialism. Saying things like you shouldn't really teach white children about racism because it makes them feel like oppressors, um that sort of--this Republican ideology right now. I was disappointed that he said America is not a racist country without also talking about the systemic racism that is plaguing this country. I mean why was he chosen to give this rebuttal? He was chosen because he is the only black Republican senator. He is that person.
