On Wednesday's CNN Tonight, host Don Lemon devoted an entire segment to a family in which a woman who voted for Donald Trump now regrets voting for him because her daughter-in-law has since been deported to Mexico. After the segment began by heavily suggesting that she had no criminal record, Lemon finally informed viewers that she had been arrested several years ago for a DWI.
The CNN host also wrongly suggested that illegal immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than legal immigrants even though a recent CATO study found that illegal immigrants have a homicide rate five times that of legal immigrants.
He began the segment by hyping buyers' remorse by "some" Trump voters. Here's Lemon: "One of President Trump's top campaign promises -- the one that many of his voters counted on the most -- was to crack down on illegal immigration. But now, as that crackdown is taking effect, some Trump voters are having second thoughts."
After letting guest Letty Stegall recount for viewers her experience of being deported to Mexico, Lemon then turned to her mother-in-law -- Shirley Stegall -- and brought up her views on President Trump by posing: "Shirley, I have to ask you because I understand you voted for President Trump in 2016, but is it true that you have some regrets about the decision. Talk to me about your regret."
After Shirley Stegall declared that she felt like she "betrayed" her daughter-in-law, Lemon followed up by suggesting that illegal immigrants are less likely to commit crimes even than legal immigrants. Lemon: "Usually, people who are immigrants -- especially illegal immigrants -- they commit less crime than U.S. citizens. Do you understand that now? Do you think the average Trump voter understands that?"
About halfway through the seven-minute interview, Lemon finally brought up Letty Stegall's DWI arrest, and asked if it was the reason she was deported. Notably, several months ago, CNN host Alisyn Camerota suggested that immigrants who drive drunk are the kind of illegal immigrants the Trump administration should be spend more time deporting after the NFL's Edwin Jackson was killed in a car crash by an illegal immigrant with a history of DWI.
Letty's husband, Steve Stegall, ended up ranting about Trump supporters being racists who want an "all white" country as the segment concluded.
