NewsBusters Year-in-Review: The Most Obnoxious Celebrity Quotes of 2016

December 30th, 2016 9:55 AM

All this week, NewsBusters is recounting the most obnoxious liberal bias of 2016. Tuesday, we presented the most outrageous examples of journalists fawning over liberal or left-wing icons; on Wednesday, we showcased some of this year’s nastiest attacks on Republicans or conservatives; and yesterday, we highlighted the dopiest quotes of the year.

Today, we finish the series with some of the most outlandish celebrity quotes of 2016, mostly of the Hollywood elite shaking their pom-poms for Hillary, hyperventilating over the idea that Trump might actually be elected, and crying “racism” or “sexism” when things don’t go their way.

We’ll Do Whatever It Takes to Elect Hillary

Host Stephen Colbert: “Well, how about politics? Are you supporting Hillary Clinton?”
Actress Sally Field: “You betcha I am. I have been for a very, very long time. I mean, I’ll go door to door. I’ll wash everybody’s car who isn’t voting for her. I don’t care what it takes.”
— Exchange on CBS’s Late Show, March 9.

“If you vote for Hillary Clinton, I will give you a blow job. OK? I’m good. I’m not a douche, and I’m not a tool. I take my time. I have a lot of eye contact, and I do swallow.”
— Madonna introducing comedian Amy Schumer for her October 18 show at Madison Square Garden in New York City, as reported by the Daily Mail’s Chelsea White in an October 19 article.

Vote for Hillary and We Can Finally Pass the ERA!

Actress/activist Jane Fonda: “It’s so exciting that she [Hillary Clinton] may very well be our president.”
Host Ellen DeGeneres: “I mean, we could have a woman president! That would be amazing.”
Fonda: “Oh, my Lord!...She will deal with things that other people are not dealing with, like domestic violence, like equal pay. Like this ERA.”
— Exchange on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, May 3, presumably talking about the 1970s Equal Rights Amendment.

Bernie’s Ideas Are Great, But Congress Is a Problem

“I love Bernie. I love the ideas that he’s got. To me, it’s like somebody who went to Woodstock who now is running for President. And it’s all those ideals, let’s just make the world a great place, and legalize this, and free health care, and free college, and going for all of that. Great ideas. But that thing called ‘Congress,’ you know, is a problem.”
— Actor Jeff Daniels on Bloomberg TV’s With All Due Respect, May 9.

Blaming “Lack of Political Will” on Guns for Orlando Terror Attack

“What we saw in Orlando was one of the ugliest cocktails of the problems that we still see here in America, a cocktail of homophobia, xenophobia, lack of access to mental health care, and sheer lack of political will....Is this what you [Congress] want your legacy to be?...That you were complicit in the deaths of thousands of Americans?”
— Comedy Central Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minhaj, regretting lack of more gun control, addressing the June 15 Radio Television Correspondents’ Association dinner aired by C-SPAN on June 18.

Delighting in Vicious Personal Attacks on Ted Cruz

“We were all blindsided by Ted Cruz suspending his campaign, no one more than me. I think you know what that man meant to Full Frontal [starts clips from past shows]: Ted Cruz, Princeton’s unwanted fetus. Fish-faced horseshit salesman. The world’s only unlikeable Canadian.... Self-described human....Half-melted Reagan dummy. Unflushable toilet clog.”
— Host Samantha Bee presenting a series of clips on the May 9 episode of TBS’s Full Frontal.

America’s Totally Objective Election Helper

“Without my insight, how will the American electorate ever be able to decide between a highly-qualified woman with impeccable credentials, and a bankrupt, misogynistic, racist, orange asshole?”
— Chelsea Handler in the May 11 debut of her new Netflix show, Chelsea.

Blame Trump’s Rise on Racist Republicans

NBC’s Willie Geist: “How do you explain the millions and millions of people who do not watch this show who actually like what they hear from Donald Trump — and aren’t taking messages and orders from us in the media — but they listen to what he says for themselves and vote for him. How do you explain that?”
Actor/activist Rob Reiner: “Well, there are a lot of people who are racist in this country.”
— Exchange on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, May 5.

“The Republican establishment is not necessarily going along supporting Donald Trump. He’s racist, he’s sexist, he’s belligerent. There are also some things about him they don’t like.”
— Host Bill Maher on HBO’s Real Time, May 6.

“It’s just beyond my comprehension how anybody could support a racist misogynist moron like Donald Trump. It’s beyond my comprehension. I mean, he’s a bad guy, you know? He’s a really bad guy....There’s something wrong with him. I don’t know what a shrink would diagnose what he is, but he’s not a normal person. There’s something mentally wrong with him...He’s just vile....Oh, my God. I honestly think it would be a really dark day in American history if he were to be elected. A really dark day.”
CSI actress Marg Helgenberger in an interview with local Washington D.C. newspaper Metro Weekly, October 20.

“I would never say all Republicans are racists. But if you’re a racist and you’re looking for a political party, this is the obvious choice....They just don’t like the idea of a black family eating off the White House china.”
— HBO Real Time host Bill Maher on MSNBC’s Hardball, July 13.

Republicans Are All a Bunch of Racists

“If the Republican Party is a gumbo — the modern Republican Party — the roux of that gumbo is white supremacy, and the core of that is the Ku Klux Klan.”
— W. Kamau Bell, comedian and host of CNN’s United Shades of America, on CNN Tonight, March 2.

If You Don’t Support Hillary, You’re Sexist

“It is time we grew up as a nation. We should stop being afraid of women, and meet them on a level playing field without resorting to name calling and sexist condescension. Hillary Clinton isn’t afraid. It’s about time that a woman with strength, experience and compassion leads our already great nation in this time of global insecurity.”
— Actress/singer Barbra Streisand in a March 25 blog for The Huffington Post headlined: “The Sexism in American Politics.”

Obama’s Problems Created by America’s “Racist Forces”

“[Barack Obama’s election] awakened a right-wing energy in this country, because nobody really expected that we would ever have elected a black man to be President. And when that reality was established, I think it shocked a lot of racist forces in this country. I think a lot of the hurdles, problems that Obama has faced is really very much based upon the fact that there is a force in this country that says no black man should ever be at the helm of this country.”
— Singer/left-wing activist Harry Belafonte on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, February 14.

Electing Trump = The End of Civilization

“If Clinton wins, I’ll miss the daily [Trump] outrage. If Trump wins, I’ll miss civilization as we know it.”
Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau in an August 29 Washington Post Q&A with writer/artist Michael Cavna.

“Look, America is, like, the best idea the world ever came up with. But Donald Trump is potentially the worst idea that ever happened to America....I think he’s trying to hijack the idea of America. And I think it’s bigger than all of us. I think it’s — this is really dangerous.”
— U2’s Bono in an interview for PBS’s Charlie Rose shown on CBS This Morning, September 20.

Bitter Liberal Whines Trump Didn’t “Legitimately” Win

“Yes, we’re sore losers, because a lot of the reason he won was based on racism, the Russian hackings. Lies. Continuous lying that went on. And the intrusion of the FBI at the last minute there. All of that seems to have basically distorted the whole election. So, yeah, we’re sore losers. Because it wasn’t really won legitimately, as far as I’m concerned.”
— Co-host Joy Behar on ABC’s The View, December 2.

Trump Sons on Par With Saddam Hussein’s Evil Offspring

“Trump also once said, ‘sometimes people will come into my office and they’ll look great, sound great, dress beautifully. Everything is great. Then after you hire them they turn out to be morons.’ Which explains his sons, Uday and Qusay. I mean, Trump senior in the White House is bad enough without these two American psychos, putting plastic over the furniture so they can axe murder prostitutes while discussing Phil Collins.”
— Host Bill Maher on HBO’s Real Time, September 30.

Stupid Americans Voting for Their Own Destruction

“This one is a nail biter and a passport grabber. It feels like we are trying to avoid the apocalypse and half the country is voting for the asteroid.”
— Host Stephen Colbert during his live election night special on Showtime, November 8, as results pointed to a Trump victory.

Congratulations, Mr. President-Elect

“The Klan won last night. White nationalists. Sexists, racists and buffoons....Hate was given hope. Abject dumbness was glamorized as being ‘the fresh voice of an outsider’ who’s going to ‘shake things up.’”
— Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin in November 9 Vanity Fair article “Read the Letter Aaron Sorkin Wrote His Daughter After Donald Trump Was Elected President.”
