On Monday morning, the White House correspondents on ABC, CBS, and NBC all eagerly played the role of unofficial Biden press aides by touting his Sunday night address to the nation as a plea to use the attempted assassination of Donald Trump as “an urgent plea...to cool down the political temperatures” and a task for Americans “to unite” by “restor[ing] civility”. 

Supporters of Donald Trump were encouraged when the former president raised his fist about a minute after being shot in the ear. But creepy Washington Post art critic Philip Kennicott warned this "powerful photograph" by AP photographer Evan Vucci was going to stoke America's Dark Side, you know, the ones who make Democracy Die in Darkness: 

Either Jack Dorsey's ghost still haunts X's algorithm or, alternatively, a radical remnant continues to work its dark arts within the platform’s ranks to undermine Elon Musk's vision of a free-speech platform divorced from its history of election interference.

Tuning in to MSNBC this morning, interested to get the take of Joe Scarborough and his cohort of fellow Trump haters on the attempted assassination, it was surprising to find that the show had been pre-empted in favor of generic coverage hosted by Ana Cabrera.

Elon Musk has made strides to turn X (formerly Twitter) into a free speech platform but there are still remnants of the Old Twitter censorship regime and they are interfering in the 2024 election. It now appears that X is actively boosting content posted by Democrat congressional members’ accounts, while simultaneously de-amplifying their GOP counterparts in the middle of an election year.

CBS ran a news special on Sunday night after President Biden’s remarks in the Oval Office. CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell interviewed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and dragged him right back to January 6 to discuss how rhetoric has grown hotter. Typically, CBS didn’t include itself in the atmosphere of overheated rhetoric.

On Friday, CBS Mornings hosted Biden campaign surrogate Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna of California. However, Khanna at least acknowledging President Biden’s gaffes and pleas for Democrats to stick with Joe fell on deaf ears at the table.

During a segment that was mostly about the various security failures that facilitated the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, former Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey made a point insufficiently expressed on the media: that if there is any rhetorical cooling to happen, it must also happen among “media personalities.”

The Washington Post shamelessly jumped right into the “no evidence” game on Sunday when Republicans complained that all of the Left’s routinely extreme demonization of Donald Trump could inspire violence. You know why: The Post has aggressively fanned the authoritarian fascist flames. "Democracy Dies in Darkness" was all about Trump.

CBS’s coverage of the aftermath of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has been awful throughout, but Chief White Correspondent Nancy Cordes may have just plumbed a new low.
