NBC on Tuesday excoriated “bully” Donald Trump for interrupting and turning the first presidential debate into a “train wreck.” Next week is the vice presidential debate featuring Mike Pence and Democratic Senator Kamala Harris. Four years ago, on October 4, 2016, journalists were much more gentle on then-vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine. 

Refusing to let go of campaign politics even for a day, on Friday, CBS This Morning seized on President Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis as the “October surprise” of the 2020 campaign. All three networks opened their Friday morning broadcasts eagerly promoting the idea that President Trump becomes gravely ill from the coronavirus. Immediately after he announced his positive test overnight, CNN broke in with hours of ghoulish gossip, expecting the worst, and this morning the more subdued networks floated the same possibility
