Ascendant Socialism among Democrats Discussed on Univision

September 14th, 2015 6:29 PM

The ascendance of “extreme left” forces in the Democrat Party, currently on the march in the candidacy of socialist Senator Bernie Sanders, emerged as a surprising focus of attention and shared concern among both the Republican and Democrat panelists on Univision’s weekly public affairs program, Al Punto.

When the topic of the current political dynamic among Democrats came up, Republican analyst Adolfo Franco observed that while Donald Trump has been generating most of the media attention in the presidential race, not enough attention has been paid to the implications of the lurch to the left among the Democrats, a development he ominously said threatens to “put an end to the capitalist system in this country.”

ADOLFO FRANCO, REPUBLICAN ANALYST: ...the leftist extremism. Because if you go to the socialist platform, at the end, as you well know Freddy, Bernie Sanders identifies as a socialist. If you just see the socialist platform on the Internet, it would put an end to the capitalist system in this country.

Even more surprisingly, Florida Democratic strategist Freddy Balsera practically conceded Franco’s point, saying “it is a valid point to a great extent” and “we recognize that we do have an extreme left in our party [emphasis added].”

The relevant portions of Al Punto appear below.

ADOLFO FRANCO, REPUBLICAN ANALYST: I am glad that in this program you have touched on the topic of the Democrats, the leftist extremism. Because if you go to the socialist platform, at the end, as you well know Freddy, Bernie Sanders identifies as a socialist. If you just see the socialist platform on the Internet, it would put an end to the capitalist system in this country, so that is the extremism. Perhaps the nonsense that Donald Trump says creates more publicity, but the policies of Bernie Sanders and where they are taking Hillary Clinton are too much, they are very worrisome, from my point of view. It reflects a Democratic Party extremism.

FREDDY BALSERA, DEMOCRATIC ANALYST: I think it is a valid point to a great extent, because in all parties there are extremes, and we recognize that we do have an extreme left inside our party [emphasis added].
