CNN's Don Lemon on Sunday asked viewers, "Why are there so many more examples of gay conservative closet cases?"
In a segment about homosexual scandals in the Republican Party, Lemon answered his own question saying, "Perhaps the GOP’s own repressive platform is the very thing that forces gay members to live a lie" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):
As the segment began, Lemon documented the sexual indiscretions of former Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig as well as former Florida Republican Congressman Mark Foley.
Then he turned to Arizona Republican Sheriff Paul Babeu’s recent outing.
After showing footage of Babeu’s press conference on the subject, Lemon said, “To our knowledge, he has never denied being gay, or to our knowledge has he ever pushed for anti-gay measures."
Lemon continued, "He only came out after becoming the subject of an abusive power scandal involving an ex-lover who just happens to be a former staffer and who just happens to be a Mexican national named Jose who says the sheriff and Congressional hopeful threatened to deport him, Jose, if he made their relationship public.”
One might ask why Lemon didn't "come out" until he turned 45.
Also of note, if the Democratic Party is so much more tolerant of LGBT issues, why have so few of its members been openly gay?
In the history of the United States Congress, there have only been three Democrats outed during their service: Tammy Baldwin, Barney Frank, Jared Polis, and Gerry Studds.
The openly gay Republican Congressmen are Steve Gunderson and Jim Kolbe.
If there are "so many more examples of gay conservative closet cases," wouldn't you imagine that in the history of our Congress, there would be far more outed Democrats?
That's a question the CNN anchor who kept his sexual orientation a secret for the first 45 years of his life chose not to ask or answer.
