HBO’s Bill Maher said Friday that members of the Tea Party support Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich because he’s racist like them.
Fortunately for the small portion of Real Time viewers with a brain, the Daily Caller’s Matt Lewis was there to set the ignorant host straight (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):
“They may not see a Republican,” said Maher early in the panel segment of the show, “but watching these last couple of debate, all of them, but especially recently, the Tea people, who really kind of wag the dog there in the Republican Party, they finally see somebody they like.”
He continued, “I mean, Newt Gingrich, I’m sorry, but he does mirror who they are: mean, snarling, borderline racist.”
Lewis smartly interrupted, “Wait a second. Newt Gingrich is a lot of things.”
“I’m sorry,” interjected Maher, “not borderline.”
This elicited laughter and applause from his sycophants in the audience.
Undeterred, Lewis accurately replied, “Wait, who’s the one guy, though, the one guy who said on stage and took heat that if you’ve been in America for 25 years, and you’re a grandfather and you’re Hispanic, we’re not going to deport you? That was Newt Gingrich.”
Indeed it was making him likely the most moderate of the remaining candidates on the illegal immigration issue.
But one shouldn’t expect Maher or his audience to understand this.
They probably get their “news” from Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.
