CNN's Cuomo Touts Hillary Clinton 'Giving Her Best' on Colbert

Wednesday's New Day on CNN spotlighted the late night shows' latest shots at the Republican presidential candidates. Michaela Pereira spotlighted how "Hillary Clinton got her own dig in. Stephen Colbert asked her about going up against Donald Trump or Ben Carson." The morning newscast also featured one-liners from NBC's Seth Meyers and TBS's Conan O'Brien, who targeted three of the GOP contenders. Chris Cuomo later hyped Mrs. Clinton "giving her best with Stephen Colbert." [video below]

Fellow anchor Alisyn Camerota reacted negatively to the round-up of clips from Colbert, Meyers, and O'Brien: "Not the funniest one — they could have done better." Cuomo replied, "I like the Colbert thing, and I like that he got Hillary Clinton to talk about what she'd do with the big banks. I like the space he's creating for himself." Camerota asserted that "it's actual news. I mean, they're breaking news on late-night talk shows. That's what's happening." Cuomo added, "Especially him."

Ten minutes later, New Day played a two-minute extended excerpt from Colbert's interview of the Democratic presidential candidate. Cuomo then gave his "giving her best" claim before introducing former Reagan administration official (and NewsBusters contributor) Jeffrey Lord and Republican strategist Ana Navarro.

The transcript of the clip compilation segment from the October 28, 2015 edition of CNN's New Day:

MICHAELA PEREIRA: Politics, once again, providing late night punchlines. Last night, Hillary Clinton got her own dig in. Stephen Colbert asked her about going up against Donald Trump or Ben Carson. Take a look at this.

STEPHEN COLBERT (from CBS's The Late Show With Stephen Colbert): Who would you rather run against: Donald Trump or Ben Carson? (audience laughs)

HILLARY CLINTON (D), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I'm going leave that to the Republicans.

COLBERT: But you can picture either one of them in the — in the office, right? You can picture either one of those guys in the office. (audience laughs)

CLINTON: Well, I — I can — I can picture them in some office. (audience laughs)

SETH MEYERS (from NBC's Late Night With Seth Meyers): The latest New York Times/CBS News poll has placed Dr. Ben Carson ahead of Donald Trump, with Carson leading 26 percent to 22 percent. And with those two leading the GOP polls, Hillary Clinton is salivating at 100 percent. (audience laughs)

CONAN O'BRIEN (from TBS's Conan): Apparently, the top political Halloween costume this year is Donald Trump. (audience laughs) That's the top — that's going to be the top costume. Meanwhile, even Jeb Bush doesn't want to go out dressed as Jeb Bush. (audience laughs)

ALISYN CAMEROTA (live): I don't know.

PEREIRA: Not the funniest batch this time?

CAMEROTA: Not the funniest one — they could have done better. 'Salivating' — is that the best we've got?

PEREIRA: Are we getting to be a tough crowd?

CAMEROTA: Yes; yes — because we've had — you know, a hundred days of this.

PEREIRA: We have a hundred more.

CAMEROTA: Yes.

CUOMO: I like the Colbert thing, and I like that he got Hillary Clinton to talk about what she'd do with the big banks—

PEREIRA: Yeah—

CAMEROTA: Yeah—

CUOMO: I like the space he's creating for himself.

CAMEROTA: Right. No, it's actual news. I mean, they're breaking news on late-night talk shows. That's what's happening.

CUOMO: Especially him.
