Sunny Hostin Scoffs, Inflation Is a ‘Republican’ Issue

October 25th, 2021 3:24 PM

Today on The View, co-host Sunny Hostin rejected the notion that the economy was an important factor to most Americans. She even scoffed at the suggestion that anyone but Republicans were concerned about inflation. The liberal co-host was responding to the topic at hand, which was if President Biden needed to do more to “woo” Independent voters.

Whoopi Goldberg wondered if the economy and border were more important to independent voters than progressive causes, such as “raising taxes on the rich or climate change,” as “prominent pollsters” suggested. Former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson was guest hosting and completely agreed with that assessment.

“100 percent,” Carlson nodded before arguing it “always came down to the pocketbook” to independents like herself. She listed all the economic problems we’re currently facing under Biden’s leadership which resonate with the independents who voted for him:

[S]o they are worried about inflation, they're worried about the supply chain coming in especially with Christmas and Hanukkah approaching. I think that price tag is everything to them. One of the things was Biden campaigned on being a moderate and he has this history of bringing the two parties together whichI think is what was so popular about him. And he really did woo the independent votes so much more so than Hillary Clinton did. So I think you’re seeing him trying to do that now in the last couple of weeks, really trying to bring back those skills that he has going between the parties and trying to get a deal done.

Carlson barely criticized Biden but Hostin couldn’t abide by even that mild take. She shot back that Carlson was repeating Republican talking points. “See, I disagree with that. That sounded very Republican of you,” the liberal host scoffed. Carlson insisted, “No, it's very independent. I'm not a Republican. I’m an independent.” Hostin huffed, “But it sounded Republican.

So it's now “Republican” to care about rising prices? What?

But criticism of their dear leader is not allowed on The View. While Sara Haines disagreed with Hostin’s take, she and Whoopi Goldberg still strongly defended President Biden as being innocent when it came to the economic downfall. “But I think one thing he's missing right now and it's not his fault, but due to the economic struggles on the heel of this pandemic and the prices and everything that’s going up, I do think we're seeing more people concerned with the budget. Even though it does sound Republican, Sunny,” Haines sighed.

Stating the obvious, Haines argued that people were concerned about feeding their families more than climate change. But she removed culpability from the president. “I think it's a unique time. That’s not Biden's fault,” she stated.

Goldberg instead praised Biden’s leadership. “I don't know anybody else could handle all this,” she exclaimed.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Hey, welcome back. Headlines, headlines, headlines. They keep pushing how President Biden needs to woo progressives in order to get his build back better agenda, but prominent pollsters claim he needs to get independent voters onboard who care more about the economy and the border than raising taxes on the rich or climate change. What do you think? What do y'all think?

GRETCHEN CARLSON: 100%. As an independent, more and more Americans are also independents. I think the latest polls show 41% of voters consider themselves to be independents even though there's any independent party to vote for. For the most part. 29% Republicans 29% Democrats. Listen, it always comes down to the pocketbook I think for independents and so they are worried about inflation, they're worried about the supply chain coming in especially with Christmas and Hanukkah approaching. I think that price tag is everything to them. One of the things was Biden campaigned on being a moderate and he has this history of bringing the two parties together which I think is what was so popular about him. And he really did woo the independent votes so much more so than Hillary Clinton did. So I think you’re seeing him trying to do that now in the last couple of weeks, really trying to bring back those skills that he has going between the parties and trying to get a deal done.

SUNNY HOSTIN: See, I disagree with that. That sounded very Republican of you.

CARLSON: No, it's very independent. I'm not a Republican. I’m an independent.

HOSTIN: But It sounded Republican. Let me say this, you know, there have been many studies about the rise of independents and what those studies have found is that few Americans who identify as independent are actually independent. In fact, the study found that people who claim to be independent are actually less inclined to say that they're a Democrat or say that they are a Republican because of the stigma that’s attached to it. Especially after the Trump era. So they're not actually changing their opinions or their views on politics. They're simply recusing themselves from publicly identifying as partisan.

SARA HAINES: I'm also an independent. I would agree with that. The reason I'm an independent I don't think the boxes are checked with whoever is presented to me. They each try to do too much and I don't agree. It's more issue to issue. I don’t feel honest in attending to one. I lean more left but I've always registered as independent because I really want to see what's presented. I wish there were a little more competition rather than just two parties. I do think what you said on this topic before, Sunny, President Biden won on the backs of certain people.

HOSTIN:  Black women and black people.

HAINES: But I think one thing he's missing right now and it's not his fault, but due to the economic struggles on the heel of this pandemic and the prices and everything that’s going up, I do think we're seeing more people concerned with the budget. Even though it does sound Republican, Sunny. Right now, because they're having a hard time feeding their families and I think that's what we're seeing, almost like we were able to -- the climate crisis is real and immediate but I think people are like, I can't worry about the climate until I feed my families. The jobs. I think it's a unique time. That’s not Biden's fault. I do think if they did a little better job of educating people what was in this bill that would serve their pocket, they could’ve maybe done more.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG:...Listen, people want to put their kids in preschool, they want that, they need it, there's no place to do it. People want to know what can I do, there are jobs out there, but people aren't taking them. We have an issue with a supply chain. This dude is juggling all of that and the pandemic and the pandemic and a side who's not even able to say well, yes, you won. But this is what -- so I just want him to do what he needs to do. I'm tired of reading the headlines. I just want him to go to work. That’s all he’s been doing. You don't see him talking and hanging out unless he needs to do, he's in Jersey today, and I appreciate the fact that he's doing the work, because I don't know anybody else could handle all this. I just don't know.
