In the realm of bizarre, wacky and just plain stupid things said on ABC’s The View, this has to up there as one of the strangest statements made on this show recently. While discussing President Trump’s address to the United Nations September 19, the hosts took pause to wonder if Trump had a “strategy” in calling Kim Jong-un “Rocket Man” because it was a “phallic” symbol.
Co-host Sara Haines first brought up the theory with a smirk:
I stick by my theory that ‘rocket man’ might be a smart move. If you think of Putin, and you think of Kim Jong-un, and you think of Donald Trump, they love these phallic references, to masculine dominance.
At that, fellow hosts Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin interrupted.
“Is ‘rocket man’ phallic?” Hostin asked with a puzzled expression on her face.
Behar snarked, “Well rocket, hello!” to which the audience laughed.
“It shoots, shoots,” Haines added, pointing upwards. “I could see that,” Hostin remarked, as the audience continued to laugh.
“You didn’t see my hand go up like this? You didn’t know what I was talking about?” Whoopi joked to Hostin.
“I think all the men in the room know what I mean when you refer to someone as ‘rocket man.’ I'm not convinced there's not a psychology here of it takes one to know one,” Haines added.
Behar then gushed, “Who needs it? This is why you need women running the world,” as the audience roared in cheers.
After some more mocking, Whoopi tried to get the conversation on a more serious note before cutting to commercial break.
“It’s just one of those things,” she said. “I prefer diplomacy,” she added to audience applause.
Behar jumped in to exclaim, “He's the great dealmaker? ‘He’s going to make a great deal.’ Threatening your opponent is not making a deal!”
“This certainly did not lead” to making us “safer” Whoopi added, before going to commercial.
After making some really naive remarks on the U.S.’s history with North Korea yesterday, perhaps The View hosts should leave these serious discussions to more seasoned professionals and stick to the penis jokes.
