Jimmy Kimmel Lobbies Biden on Gun Control in Softball Interview

June 9th, 2022 2:28 AM

Low in the polls and failing on every front, President Joe Biden decided to sit down for a softball interview with leftist late-night “comedian” Jimmy Kimmel Wednesday evening to try to rehabilitate his floundering presidency, and luckily for Biden, Kimmel was happy to oblige.

After exchanging pleasantries, Kimmel cut to the chase to lobby Biden on gun control in light of the string of mass shootings in recent weeks: “There've been, what, 27 shootings at schools? I guess -- I mean, just to get into it, why haven't we done anything about this?”

Biden answered by scapegoating the National Rifle Association (NRA) and calling the Republican Party the “MAGA Party. “I think a lot of its intimidation by the NRA and -- look, this is not your father's Republican Party, this is a MAGA party. It's a very different” Biden whined.

The President speculated that “if they vote for rational gun policy, they're going to be primaried. And they're going to lose in a hard-right Republican primary.”

“Shouldn't we demand that every Senator in the United States sit with those families?” Kimmel sympathetically asked in an emotional tone referring to the families of mass shooting victims.

Biden agreed and sought to make future elections a referendum on gun control: “you've got to make sure that this becomes a voting issue. It's got to be one of those issues where you decide your position on the issue, Senator, or candidate for House or Senate, on what we're going to do with assault weapons.”

Kimmel concurred and preached “it is our fault that the people in the House and Congress can take responsibility for it, but it is our fault because we need to stop this” adding “we need to do it.” Biden reminded Kimmel that the last time the United States had an "assault weapons ban", it expired in 2004.

In response to that, Kimmel asked “can’t you issue an executive order? Trump passed those out like Halloween candy.”

The President doubled down on the Trump hatred by invoking the former President’s alleged abuse of power: “I don't want to emulate Trump's abuse of the constitution and the constitutional authority.”

He added, “I often get asked -- look, the Republicans don't play it square, why do you play it square?” Biden continued his explanation: “well, guess what, if we do the same thing they do, our democracy will literally be in jeopardy.”

Kimmel partially agreed and said “it's like you're playing monopoly with somebody who won't pass "Go," won't follow any of the rules, and how do you ever make any progress if they're not following the rules?”

Biden jumped in and used another Monopoly metaphor: “you've got to send them to jail.”

After the two went to commercial break, Kimmel played the “poor Joe” card by sympathizing with Biden’s troubled presidency: “Roe vs Wade. Boy, these things just keep coming at you, don't they? I mean there's no -- you have not had an easy -- what a terrible job you have. I'm glad you're doing it, but boy oh boy does this seem like a bad gig."

Once again the media acts like all these terrible things are just happening to Biden and act as if he has nothing to do with the record inflation, gas prices, and all the other calamities that have befallen the country.

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

12:35:41 a.m. Eastern

JIMMY KIMMEL: You were here in September of 2019. And one of the things we talked about at length was gun violence. And you said that we need to do something about gun violence, particularly when it comes to our schools. And here we are a couple of years later. We're half way through this year already. There've been, what, 27 shootings at schools? I guess -- I mean, just to get into it, why haven't we done anything about this?

JOE BIDEN: Well, I think a lot of its intimidation by the NRA and -- look, this is not your father's Republican Party, this is a MAGA party. It's a very different -- a very different Republican Party. And so you find people who are worried, I believe, that if they vote for rational gun policy, they're going to be primaried. And they're going to lose in a hard-right Republican primary.

(...)

KIMMEL: Shouldn't we demand that every Senator in the United States sit with those families?

BIDEN: Well, the answer is -- I think we should make the demand. Here's what has to happen. All of you folks, and I hope -- I'm not being facetious when I say this, I hope the Republicans here as well, you've got to make sure that this becomes a voting issue. It's got to be one of those issues where you decide your position on the issue, Senator, or candidate for House or Senate, on what we're going to do with assault weapons and maybe it will have 300 rounds in a magazine, I mean -- what you say on those things is going to determine how I'm going to vote for you. It should be one of those issues.

KIMMEL: You're right, it is our fault that the people in the House and Congress can take responsibility for it, but it is our fault because we need to stop this. We need to do it.

BIDEN: Well, we did last time, as I've said. And it expired in 2004.

KIMMEL: Can’t you issue an executive order? Trump passed those out like Halloween candy.

BIDEN: The answer—well I did.

KIMMEL: Isn't that something that should happen?

BIDEN: Well, I have issued executive orders, within the power of the presidency to be able to deal with these -- everything having to do with guns, gun ownership, whether or not you have to have a waiting -- all the things that were within my power. What I don't want to do, and I'm not being facetious, I don't want to emulate Trump's abuse of the constitution and the constitutional authority.

And so -- I mean that sincerely. I often get asked -- look, the Republicans don't play it square, why do you play it square?

KIMMEL: Yeah.

BIDEN: Well, guess what, if we do the same thing they do, our democracy will literally be in jeopardy.

KIMMEL: Well, yeah.

BIDEN: It's not a joke.

KIMMEL: I understand their argument. But also, it's like you're playing monopoly with somebody who won't pass "Go," won't follow any of the rules, and how do you ever make any progress if they're not following the rules?

BIDEN: You've got to send them to jail. You know. There's that little box.

KIMMEL: Go directly to jail?
