CBS’s Chief White House correspondent Major Garrett hyped the rise of the once “fringe” socialist Bernie Sanders as an “enormously important moment” for the country. On Friday night’s edition of PBS’s Charlie Rose show, Garrett marveled “The [Bernie] Sanders phenomenon is real and long-lasting.”
Garrett added the leftist Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential candidate had spent years being ignored but “he’s not a fringe type figure anymore....I think that’s an enormously important moment for this country.”
The following exchange was aired on the April 15 edition of PBS’s Charlie Rose show:
CHARLIE ROSE, HOST: Isn’t that amazing though? Drawing 27,000 people in Brooklyn for a rally?
MAJOR GARRETT, CBS CHIEF WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Yeah, absolutely. The [Bernie] Sanders phenomenon is real and long-lasting, and I think of enormous importance to this country. Whatever happens in this Democratic race, Bernie Sanders spent years and years and years in Congress saying exactly the same things he’s saying now but to zero audience. Zero audience in the public and zero audience in Congress. Nobody paid attention to him. He was reviewed as such a fringe type figure.
ROSE: A Democratic-Socialist —
GARRETT: And he’s not a fringe type figure anymore nor, or is that agenda. I think that’s an enormously important moment for this country.
