Fact Check: CBS's Garrett Falsely Cries 'Epidemic' of Violence Against Asian Americans

March 14th, 2021 9:12 AM

On Friday’s CBS This Morning, co-host Anthony Mason brought on chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett to swoon over Joe Biden's COVID speech. Mason highlighted that Biden introduced the topic of violence against Asian Americans and Garrett honored Biden for inserting that topic himself, wildly asserting that there is an “epidemic."

The media constructed this narrative due to their loathing of Trump’s use of the term “China virus” so they could claim that he is racist and blame him for attacks on Asian Americans. Beware any time a reporter calls anything an "epidemic" that isn't an outbreak of disease. Do we really need bad "epidemic" metaphors during a pandemic?

ANTHONY MASON: As we saw, the President made a point of calling out attacks on Asian Americans and saying they must stop, Major. Why is that important? Why did he put that in the speech?

MAJOR GARRETT: Because the numbers are an epidemic, and that is not an exaggeration. The statistical numbers of the incidents, not only of violent ones, but of shunning, of screaming, of spitting at people, fellow Americans being attacked by their own Americans, people who don't have any other country but America, but look Asian or have an Asian ethnicity in their background, maybe two or three generations ago, are being attacked in this country. They're suffering psychologically in addition to all the other suffering that we’re doing because of the pandemic. It is a real problem and the President wanted himself -- he rewrote the speech to include this highlighted.

Actually, is is an exaggeration. Jim Geraghty at National Review found the narrative on this "surge" is all over the media:

PBS: “How to address the surge of anti-Asian hate crimes.

USA Today: “Hate crimes against Asian Americans are on the rise.

CNN: “Attacks against Asian Americans are on the rise.

He turned to a liberal media outlet himself -- Jay Caspian Kang, writing for the New York Times op-ed page last Sunday:

There are claims of a huge national spike in anti-Asian hate crimes, but they largely rely on self-reported data from organizations like Stop AAPI Hate that popped up after the start of the pandemic. These resources are valuable, but they also use as their comparison point spotty and famously unreliable official hate crime statistics from law enforcement. If we cannot really tell how many hate crimes took place before, can we really argue that there has been a surge?

There have also been reports that suggest that these attacks be placed within the context of rising crime nationwide, especially in large cities. What initially appears to be a crime wave targeting Asians might just be a few data points in a more raceless story.

No one should applaud yelling at Asian Americans, like every one of them is responsible for the pandemic. But it’s strange how the hacks in the liberal media love Biden’s first speech on COVID, but attacked Donald Trump’s first address on COVID and labeled it xenophobic. It’s almost like they are extremely biased or something.

Of course, regurgitating Biden talking points is nothing new to Mason, as he helped to defend Hunter Biden using Democratic rhetoric about the accusations against him.

Exaggeration is nothing new to Garrett however as he once used Winston Churchill quotes about the Nazis to attack Trump. For the liberal media, truth is much less important than narrative.
