On Sunday afternoon, as Doris Kearns Goodwin appeared on both CNN and MSNBC to promote her new book, the longtime NBC presidential historian fretted that after Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation, the U.S. Supreme Court will go to the right on abortion, voting rights, and other issues, and on CNN called the possibilities "worrisome."
At 2:18 p.m. Eastern, after CNN host Fredricka Whitfield asked about the issue of whether President Donald Trump wants the new Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, Goodwin noted some of Trump's legislative successes and then added:
But I think the worrisome thing I think is not just what will happen to the settled law of Roe v. Wade. There's a lot happening behind the scenes right now on voting rights, on environmental law, on women's rights. While we've been so focused on everyday breaking news that we're not seeing that a lot of settled law of the last 50 years -- Medicaid, Medicare -- are being slowly chipped away.
She continued:
And I think that that's the narrative that, if the Democrats want to provide a story for the country, it cannot simply be a fight with Donald Trump. .. It has to be a fight with passion for restoring what the last 50 years has created in terms of social foundaton, economic justice opportunity for people.
On MSNBC at 12:42 p.m. Eastern, Goodwin suggested that the Court would be inclined to rule in opposition to public opinion on Roe v. Wade, voting rights, and immigration.
