Thanks to the outsized role that “the media” — that’s the news media, entertainment media, and social media — play in our national discourse, the vacuous and vulgar pronouncements of left-wing celebrities are widely promoted as if they were actually important contributions to the political dialogue.

Eight years ago, the Late Show’s David Letterman ended his record-setting 33-year run as a broadcast late-night host. Letterman was an obvious liberal who used the platform of his show to promote and flatter liberal politicians like Barack Obama, and to ridicule Republicans with whom he disagreed on issues such as gun rights.

Eight years ago this week, the highest-rated news anchor in America — NBC’s Brian Williams — was taken off the air for the wild exaggerations and outright falsehoods he’d been telling for at least a decade.
