Appearing as a guest on Friday's Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO, during a discussion of the Catholic Church's refusal to allow women to become priests, liberal commentator Ron Reagan obnoxiously charged that "all of those monotheisms," specifying "Judaism, Islam, Christianity," are "terrified of" and "hate women" and "hate genitals." Moments later, he mocked these religions as encouraging people to offer their daughters to rapists. Reagan:
All of those monotheisms, they're terrified of women. Whether it's Judaism, Islam, Christianity, they hate women, they hate genitals. They hate, you know, you're not supposed to -- you know, they just don't want to know nothing about that.
After English comedian John Cleese jumped in to claim that early Christianity was anti-sex, Reagan added:
Unless, on the other hand, angels come to visit your home, and then the townspeople arrive and they want to rape the angels, you offer your daughters instead.
Before changing the subject, the anti-religion panel concluded:
BILL MAHER: You're talking about the Sodom and Gomorrah story
RON REAGAN: Yes, exactly. Why not if that's what you want to do? Poor angels.
JOHN CLEESE: You're a naughty boy, you are.
Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Friday, September 25, Real Time with Bill Maher from about 10:26 p.m.:
BILL MAHER: And speaking of playing the infallible card, the women thing. i mean, he's (Pope Francis) such a smart guy. he must know it's caveman time to be still saying that women can't be -- he was talking to the nuns at St. Patrick -- he said, "I love you, but apparently not enough to put you on equal footing with men."
He could play that infallible card and and say, "Hey, this just in. I got it. Women-" And especially in the Third World where women are abused so much.
JOHN CLEESE: Suppose you think of him as a basically very nice guy who's been put in charge on an absolutely dreadful organization-
MAHER: Yeah.
CLEESE: How much can he be expected to achieve? You can't change it overnight.
MAHER: No. And he has changed the tone.
RON REAGAN: All of those monotheisms, they're terrified of women. Whether it's Judaism, Islam, Christianity, they hate women, they hate genitals. They hate, you know, you're not supposed to -- you know, they just don't want to know nothing about that.
CLEESE: You only have to see what the early Christians said about sex which is really: "It's bad. Don't do it, but, if you absolutely have to, then it's sort of all right if you're married and it's totally for the purpose of having children." I mean, if you start with a bit of theology like that-
REAGAN: Unless, on the other hand, angels come to visit your home, and then the townspeople arrive and they want to rape the angels, you offer your daughters instead.
MAHER: You're talking about the Sodom and Gomorrah story
REAGAN: Yes, exactly. Why not if that's what you want to do? Poor angels.
CLEESE: You're a naughty boy, you are.
