Via Soopermexican, we learn that the weekend PC-fest at MSNBC is getting truly wacky. Remember when the Left that adores using profanity on the air wanted the FCC to fine media outlets for using the word “Redskin”? On the Melissa Harris-Perry show on Sunday morning, a guest announced the need for the FCC to fine people for “misgendering” transgenders. Call Bruce Jenner by his birth name or birth gender? Slapped with a fine.
"NBC BLK contributor" Danielle Moodie-Mills (a lesbian activist who has written with her partner Aisha Moodie-Mills) wants to stretch the FCC – which only regulates broadcast radio and TV – into policing the Internet and print for “misgendering.”
Subbing for Harris-Perry, transgender activist Janet Mock threw the conversation to Moodie-Mills about the need for the media to push the LGBT revolution:
JANET MOCK: We also know that the other piece of it, not just policy change, but culture change is so important. The media’s representation of trans-womanhood or you know, black trans women is necessary to change. What do you think about the landscape, particularly right now with trans women of color in media?
DANIELLE MOODIE-MILLS: You know, I think the first issue is that We need to stop misgendering people in the media and there needs to be some type of fine that's put into place for outlets, for media outlets, whether they be print, online, radio or what have you that decide that they're just not going to call people be their name -- right? – and that they're going to misgender them just because they can.
And that’s what we saw with K.C. Haggard, we saw in the press, we saw, we’ve seen all over the place, and it’s ridiculous. There are guidelines that have been put in place by GLAAD -- right? -- that have been put out to all press outlets. And if you don't follow them you should be fined by the FCC. It should be that serious.
So the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation would become a quasi-governmental agency that sets the rules for civil discourse, and the First Amendment can be retired as a relic of a less progressive America?
By the way, K.C. Haggard was stabbed to death while wearing women’s clothes in Fresno on Saturday. As for “misgendering” this man “all over the place,” the gay magazine The Advocate notes his last Facebook page listed his name as “Kenton Haggard” and “was kept under her male birth name and pronouns.” That would make it a hard case for a “misgendering” fine.
