Daily Kos Week in Review: Benghazi Bamboozle

May 10th, 2013 11:27 PM

Some of America's most prominent lefty bloggers opined this week that there's just no there there regarding Benghazi. One of them, DKos founder and publisher Markos Moulitsas, claimed that delusional Republicans, desperate for anything that might discredit the "scandal-free" Obama administration, are clinging to Benghazi as if it were a life preserver.

As usual, each headline is preceded by the blogger's name or pseudonym.

Kos: Obama's high ethical standards frustrate GOPers

...[T]his is the same crowd that didn't give a fuck about Bush's genuine lies that got people genuinely killed. And lots of them...

...After over four years of the most scandal-free administration since forever, conservatives have to hang on to some semblance of malfeasance to continue justifying their pathetic hysteria, and given the failure of their Fast and Furious hysteria, maybe this Benghazi thing can become the new scandal of the century...

Justin Doolittle: David Gregory's boogeyman, exposed

...[T]he quixotic project of Keeping America Safe only seems to interest the political and media classes when it revolves around combating the virtually nonexistent specter of terrorism...

...The focus on the Terror Threat is just fanatically out of proportion relative to the coverage of virtually any other "threat" one can think of. Devoting an entire Meet the Press to syphilis and the current state of medical research on syphilis would make more sense than this.

The obsession with domestic terrorism serves important objectives of the political class. It provides a rationale for further eroding privacy and civil liberties...It keeps Americans scared, obedient, and supportive of their leaders (a New Age of Terror is hardly an appropriate time for dissent)...

Troubadour: The GOP wants to go back to the 17th century

...The Republican Party is a degenerate force in our society representing destructive, backward, barbarous elements seemingly incapable of either reason or decency, and so I can't for the life of me find this latest attempt on their part to censor science surprising.  Science is concerned with the intelligent examination of objective facts, and authoritarian minds have no use for such unvarnished reality - to them facts are nothing more than unpolished stones that must be carefully remolded (i.e., corrupted) into far more convenient Lies...Conservatism in America is a malignant cancer that won't stop until it has reversed every inch of human progress made since Galileo, or until enlightened people stand up for civilization...

Troubadour: The NRA, a quasi-religious killing machine

...The NRA and its fellow-traveler gun anarchy organizations have nothing whatsoever to do with Constitutional rights: They are a priesthood of murder fanatically committed to the promotion of human destruction and suffering, because at their core are businesses that depend on it, and that could not financially survive on the idle interests of hobbyists in a safe and secure America...

...[T]he American people are the grist for their mill, grinding human bodies of all ages to make their bread, and cavalierly dictating terms to the US government in the face of overwhelming outcry from 90% of the citizenry demanding greater regulation and accountability...

Virally Suppressed: 'Star-Spangled Banner' enough patriotic music for one ballgame

...[T]he anthem has a certain gravitas and history that render its use at sporting events appropriate. Where it becomes inappropriate is when organizations decide it would be nice to splatter even more jingoistic juice throughout the course of the game to provide us with regular reminders of how awesome America is. I went to Nationals Park a couple of weeks ago to see my Cincinnati Reds put a hurting on the Montreal Washington Expos Nationals and was a little freaked out at the level of forced patriotism on display...

...[W]hen the last out had been recorded in the top of the 7th and I readied my voice for a raucous and off-key rendition of Take Me Out To The Ball Game, I noticed some folks taking their hats off and turning towards the American flag out in left-centerfield. The next thing I know, some disembodied voice comes over the PA system in a reverent and slightly somber tone, singing, “O beautiful, for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain…”. And I just sat there. I sat there in my seat and said, “son of a bitch,” to no one in particular, resolved not to get up and placate this self-indulgent, propagandistic bullshit—but then my friend looked over at me and said we’d make a scene if we didn’t get up and that it wasn’t worth the trouble, so I got up.

I don’t know when this became a custom in baseball stadiums and it could be something peculiar to Nationals Park—though I doubt it—but telling folks to sing America The Beautiful during the 7th Inning Stretch is some low down dirty shit...
