Liberal actor and comedian John Fugelsang was a guest on Monday's Starting Point and took the opportunity to bash Republican candidates and spew liberal talking points. Apparently CNN thought the comedian had some serious commentary to offer on the news of the day.
At the very end of the show, Fugelsang launched parting shots at Republican front-runners Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney. He lectured Santorum that Jesus never advocated the positions that Santorum takes as a socially-conservative Catholic politician. [Video below the break.]
"And finally it's worth reminding Rick Santorum and his entire campaign that Jesus never once condemned birth control or gay people, never fought for tax cuts for the wealthiest Nazarenes, never defended torture, and never asked a leper for a co-pay," Fugelsang said.
Fugelsang has offered some odd "Christian" commentary before. His official online bio reads that as the son of a former nun, "He admires Jesus as any guy would admire mom’s first husband." Charming.
Earlier in the show, the liberal comedian was also given a chance to grill Newt Gingrich's deputy campaign manager. He spouted the liberal talking point that while Gingrich was House Speaker, the economy was fixed in part because of tax hikes on the wealthy – quite an un-Republican measure.
"Sir, when Newt Gingrich talks about compromising with the Clinton administration to help fix the economy in the 90s, isn't it fair to point out that in large measure that was achieved by raising taxes on the highest income earners?" he asked.
