Amber Ruffin Warns Midterms May Be 'The Last Chance' To Vote

October 21st, 2026 9:37 AM

Every so often, NBC’s Seth Meyers will invite Late Night writer Amber Ruffin on to the show for a segment he calls “Amber Says What” where Ruffin proceeds to recap the news by saying “what” in various ways. On Tuesday’s show, Ruffin used the occasion to warn that the upcoming midterms may be the last election ever and pleaded with viewers not to take a Democrat win for granted and urged them to remember 2016.

Ruffin began her warnings by declaring, “You guys, things have been crazy. Okay, so first of all, I saw on the news that people are thinking the midterms are going to be great for Democrats. And I was like, ‘What?’ Then they said, 'It'll be a blue wave.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ Then they said it was going to be a blue tsunami. And I was like, ‘What are you doing?’”

She then wondered, “Are you trying to jinx us?”

Rewinding a decade, Ruffin urged viewers to remember their disappointment and channel that into the midterms, “You want to ruin what might be the last chance we get to vote? Y'all remember how you were acting right before Hillary Clinton lost, right? All cocky. And then the morning after the election we all woke up crying in our white pant suits. Do you want to feel that way again? Okay, then shut up!”

Ruffin’s use of the word “us” is not surprising, but it is noteworthy. Outside of Late Night, Ruffin is perhaps best known for originally being scheduled to be the comedian at the 2025 White House Correspondents Dinner despite calling the Trump administration “a bunch of murderers.” Eventually, her invitation was revoked, and she reacted by saying, “It would be impossible” to “make jokes about both sides.” The fact that the Correspondents’ Association thought even inviting her in the first place was a good idea tells you all you need to know about what they think “us” means.

Here is a transcript for the October 19-taped show:
