OMISSION: Nets SILENT on the Indictment of the SPLC’s Former CFO

The Southern Poverty Law Center was recently indicted on a slew of federal charges, including fraud. Today a top official was indicted in relation to these charges. Then, as now, the Elitist Media Evening News seemingly took a vow of collective silence.

As a memory refresher, here’s the original report as aired on the PBS News Hour on Tuesday, April 21st, 2026:

 

 

AMNA NAWAZ: In the day’s other headlines, the Justice Department announced criminal charges today against the Southern Poverty Law Center over its past use of paid informants to infiltrate extremist groups. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche told reporters late this afternoon that the charges include wire fraud, bank fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Earlier in the day, the head of the organization says that while it no longer works with paid informants, their contributions had been invaluable.

BRYAN FAIR: When we began working with informants, we were living in the shadow of the height of the Civil Rights movement, which had seen bombings at churches, state-sponsored violence against demonstrators, and the murders of activists that went unanswered by the justice system. There is no question that what we learned from informants saved lives. 

NAWAZ: The Southern Poverty Law Center was founded in 1971, and has long been criticized by Republicans who say it unfairly targets conservative groups and individuals. Last year, FBI director Kash Patel said the agency was severing its ties with the center, which for years had provided law enforcement with research on domestic extremism.

As we noted at the time:

To wit: the SPLC paid off Klansmen in order to continue to gin up hate and help maintain the illusion of relevance. And according to the indictment, they may have helped fund the 2017 “Unite the Right” in Charlottesville that served as the basis for the “Very Fine People Hoax” and as the moral basis for Joe Biden’s 2019 presidential campaign announcement.

BRET BAIER: David, the Attorney General also made an announcement related to the Southern Poverty Law Center today. What about that?

DAVID SPUNT: Well, we’re learning that the former Chief Financial Officer- former CFO of the embattled organization was indicted earlier today. She turned herself in to authorities in California. The SPLC is accused of funneling donor money to some of the groups it aimed to stop, like the Ku Klux Klan. Now her name is Heidi Beirich. She was scheduled to be in court in California in the past hour, accused of helping funnel more than a million dollars in donor funds to a confidential informant to infiltrate a neo-nazi organization. Authorities say she was in a romantic relationship with that source. DoJ indicted the SPLC earlier this year. We’re told more charges are possible in this ongoing investigation. Bret.

What compelling stories bumped the indictment of the former SPLC CFO allegedly rerouting donor monies to her live-in neonazi lover from the airwaves? Among other things: ICE spending $20M on electroshock gloves (ABC, NBC), John Hinckley, Jr. shooting his shot with Jodie Foster (NBC), Travis Kelce gushing about his wedding to Taylor Swift (CBS, NBC), and Bob Iger and a Kushner buying the Lakers (ABC). 

We are reminded yet again that what doesn’t air on the evening news is often far more important than what does.
