NewsBusters Podcast: Questioning California Vote Counting Is Baseless?

June 12th, 2026 5:25 AM

The liberal broadcast and cable news networks have attacked the widespread skepticism about the slow-moving reversal in the Los Angeles mayoral election results as Trump and the Republicans spreading “baseless conspiracy theories.” California's unique way of taking a month to count votes was touted as careful, not manipulative.

We’ve seen independent candidate Spencer Pratt go from up ten points for Slot Two on Election Night behind incumbent mayor Karen Bass to falling behind to radical socialist Nithya Raman.

MRC Senior Research Analyst Bill D'Agostino and MRC Video Managing Editor Brittany Hughes joined the show to discuss this notion that every conservative suspicion of blue-state vote-counting has "no evidence," suggesting that "election denial" is something that only Republicans do. Liberals spent Trump's first term arguing he was illegitimately elected in a Russian plot, and have now denied Trump actually won in 2024, and that he's going to steal the midterms in 2026. Those apparently aren't "baseless conspiracy theories."

From there we discussed the attempted beheading of a man in Belfast, Ireland. American networks hate stories of "migrants of color" committing crimes against innocent white people. They feel like that entire narrative is too MAGA. The latest crime story comes from Northern Ireland, where Sudanese migrant Hadi Alodid, 30, was ordered held in jail after appearing in court in Belfast, where a detective said he blinded Stephen Ogilvie in the left eye during a knife attack

This became a story here (at least on NBC and PBS) when locals erupted in riots over the crime, setting fire to migrant housing. Hilary Benn, the Labour Party's secretary for Northern Ireland, condemned the rioting as "racist thuggery," but that term best applies to Alodid's stabbing attack.

Benn also objected in the House of Commons when M.P. Jim Allister asked “what will be done to stop the importation of an alien culture that thinks it is appropriate to try to behead someone within the United Kingdom"? You can't blame an "alien culture" for migrant crime. That's apparently racist.

In the conservative magazine The Spectator, commentator Brendan O'Neill argued: To the modern left there is no greater thoughtcrime than to make a moral distinction between cultures. It is tantamount to heresy in their world to suggest that some cultures enjoy fewer virtues than others.”

In American crime, a jury deliberated three hours and found Karmelo Anthony guilty of manslaughter in the stabbing death of fellow teenager Austin Metcalf at a high-school track meet last year. In a front-page story, Washington Post reporter Molly Hennessey-Fiske put the murder aside and obsessed about “right-wing provocateur Jake Lang” exploiting the case to spread racial divisions. Plus: a candidate for mayor there called immigrants “rats” and Islam a “terrorist group,” according to her. Then she found a black man to ask “How can they reach a verdict like this in a case like this?....Americans have shown they don’t care about black people.” How dare a killer be convicted in a killing?
