The Media’s Mangled Moral Compass: David Bozell on Kristen Welker and Scott Pelley

June 8th, 2026 2:50 PM

Media Research Center President David Bozell joined Larry O’Connor on O’Connor & Company Monday morning to take aim at a total collapse in journalistic standards at NBC and CBS. Focusing on NBC’s Kristen Welker and former CBS anchor Scott Pelley, Bozell argued that the modern press corps is increasingly defined by double standards and open hostility toward the public.

During an interview with Donald Trump that aired on June 7, Kristen Welker repeatedly cut off the president, drawing sharp criticism for her combative tone. As Bozell pointed out, while Welker’s performance will likely earn her accolades from her peers, it highlighted a profound double standard in newsroom accountability. He pointed to Pelley, who was recently ousted by CBS News following reported confrontations with CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss and 60 Minutes executive producer Nick Bilton, as proof of how unevenly corporate media doles out discipline.

Bozell also criticized Pelley for recent comments in which the veteran journalist expressed a deep concern for the American public to the point of tears, suggesting that Pelley’s actions do not match his rhetoric. If his claim were true, pompous Pelley would actually care about Americans’ lack of trust in the media; yet he refused to acknowledge the results of the annual Gallup poll, which proved that only 8% of Americans believe in the media “at all” while 28% of them believe it “somewhat.” Bozell succinctly stated:

“You would think that the anchor of 60 minutes … might have a keen interest in those figures; but he just whistled by them, because he thinks he’s beyond reproach.”

Pelley’s ignorance and arrogance were spotlighted further in his interview with the New York Times when he shamelessly disrespected the U.S. military. By insinuating that he has been in active combat as a journalist, he trampled over the dignity of service members who have bled and died for our country.

The twisted ethics of Welker, Pelley, and the liberal media are undeniable. Bozell highlighted their flagrant hypocrisy, undeniable double standards, and blaring disrespect, exposing the elitist media’s mangled moral compass most of all.
