An alternative search engine is making a pitch to pro-free speech users, as “monopolist” Google repeatedly demonstrates a willingness to engage in relentless election interference in search results.
Meet Luxxle, a search engine launched in 2022 that promises to not behave like a Ministry of Truth like its leftist Big Tech competitors like Google. On Sept. 25, MRC interviewed Molly Koweek, a Luxxle spokesperson and former Ohio-based news anchor, about the ubiquity of censorship on social media and in what ways Luxxle presents an alternative to the big pro-censorship platforms. In response to a question about collaboration between Big Tech and the federal government to fight so-called disinformation and misinformation, Koweek took a stand for free speech.
“On the topic of mis- and disinformation, I can tell you that Luxxle’s stance is that we're not the ones who decide what is misinformation. We're not the ones who decide what's disinformation,” Koweek said. “On Luxxle, you're going to see plenty of sources. You're going to see plenty of headlines that you disagree with. Maybe you even think they're crazy. But with Luxxle the difference is you get to choose if you read them, if you engage with those sources and those results for whatever topic it is that you're searching with.” By contrast, said Koweek, “You don't even really have that choice with the big search engines because you're just getting one perspective.”
Koweek reaffirmed to MRC that Luxxle has no interest in colluding with the government to censor speech and arbitrarily decide for users what is true and false information, as Google, Meta and Old Regime Twitter had in the past. In a written response to a follow-up question on this issue, Koweek stated, “We don’t make judgments about misinformation or disinformation, but rather allow our users to engage with content as they see fit and make those determinations for themselves.”
She went on to declare Luxxle’s commitment to “free expression” within the bounds of the law. “We strive to create an environment without undue influence or censorship – one that supports informed decision-making and free access to information for all users,” Koweek continued.
During the interview, Koweek displayed Luxxle’s search features for the MRC, showing a mix of sources on the right and left sides of the political spectrum in the results. Koweek also addressed the differences between Luxxle and Google on a host of issues, from giving users more privacy to eliminating bias in search results.
The Media Research Center repeatedly exposed Google for engaging in rampant election interference on behalf of Democrats between 2008 and 2024.
