NBC Ignores Federal Judge Blocking Biden's Asylum Policy

July 25th, 2023 8:45 PM

The Biden administration faced yet another defeat in the courts Tuesday when a federal judge blocked a major piece of Biden’s immigration policy. After two-plus years of his refusal to secure the U.S./Mexico border, Biden’s bandaid has been yanked off by a U.S. District Court judge. To their credit, ABC’s World News Tonight, and CBS Evening News both covered the latest court defeat for the Biden administration. NBC Nightly News skipped it altogether. Instead, anchor Lester Holt decided a melodramatic segment on how so-called “climate change” affecting tourist destinations was more important.

While the other two networks reported on the story, they did seem disappointed by another defeat for their beloved President. ABC’s World News Tonight anchor David Muir fretted “a major legal setback for President Biden's attempt to crack down on migrant crossings at the southern border.” Muir then added that “the Biden administration [is] planning to appeal the ruling.”

Reporting from the North Lawn of the White House, correspondent Weijia Jiang told CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell that the Biden administration’s “asylum policy bars most migrants who pass through another country before coming to the U.S. from seeking asylum once they get here.”

“The administration says that’s one big reason why border crossings have plummeted since it was implemented in May. The Justice Department plans to appeal the ruling,” Jiang added.

DAVID MUIR: Back here at home, and to the U.S./Mexico border. Tonight, a major legal setback for President Biden's attempt to crack down on migrant crossings at the southern border. A federal judge in Oakland now blocking the new rule requiring migrants seeking asylum at the southern border to apply online or request protection in one of the countries they pass through on their way to the U.S.. DHS says the rule has been a key part in helping the administration reduce crossings by 30 percent just since Title 42 expired in May. Advocacy groups sued the administration. The White House tonight saying so far that policy remains intact. The Biden administration planning to appeal the ruling.

NORAH O’DONNELL: And Weijia, I understand a federal judge has blocked a significant part of Biden's immigration policy. What can you tell us about that?

WEIJIA JIANG: That's right, Norah. The asylum policy bars most migrants who pass through another country before coming to the U.S. from seeking asylum once they get here. The administration says that’s one big reason why border crossings have plummeted since it was implemented in May. The Justice Department plans to appeal the ruling. Norah?
