Joe Scarborough got into a bit of a faux argument with CBS's Stephen Colbert and wife and fellow MSNBC Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski on The Late Show early Friday morning over whether the GOP is a fascist party or simply following a fascist leader. Beyond these artificial differences, all could at least agree that the GOP is populated with morons.
Of all the people to ask about the state of the Republican Party, Colbert picked Scarborough, posing, "What's going on with your former party right now?"
Trying too hard to not be controversial, Scarborough claimed, "It's still embracing a guy, and they're still following a guy who -- I'm not saying the Republican Party's fascist, but the guy that they're following is a fascist."
Colbert quipped, "They're not fascists, they're fascist curious," to which Scarborough not-so cleverly tried to distance himself from his own comments with, "Well, you said that."
Colbert then called him out for his unwillingness to take his assertion to its logical conclusion: "If you're following a guy who's fascist, you're not a fascist? What are you?"
Scarborough, after years of dictator analogies, offered up a weak, "I'm trying to be polite here." After Brzezinski interrupted to declare, "They're fascists," Scarborough continued with his "polite" diatribe against the GOP: "I will tell you what they are, they're increasingly liberal, they're increasingly authoritarian, and they're increasingly dumb, ignorant, xenophobic."
Brzezinski then mocked her husband's faux politeness with, "Okay, that’s going to do well." Colbert too, mocked Scarborough's fake civility, teasing "I think fascist is nicer than what you're saying."
But, Brzezinski at least agreed that is full of "A bunch of morons." Scarborough then held former President Bush, a man he once questioned possessed the smarts and mental capacity to lead the country, as the voice of reason in the party: "When you have George W. Bush saying what he said about it."
Colbert too seemed to long for the days of another president that received fascist comparisons on his show: "George W. Bush said, just for the people who didn't hear, that the GOP sounds increasingly isolationist and nativist especially when talking about immigration."
