British filmmaker and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen is praising himself and his recent movie Borat 2 for their role in helping to oust President Donald Trump from the White House.
In recent interviews – one with leftwing pop culture rag, Vanity Fair on February 23 and the other with NPR – the director and actor of several lewd mockumentaries and comedy movies including Bruno, Borat, and The Dictator spoke candidly about how his most recent film contributed to the electoral defeat of the Hollywood-hated 45th President.
Beginning with Vanity Fair Cohen told the paper he believed his film was “successful” insofar as it distracted Trump lawyer and former New York City mayor, Rudy Giuliani right around the time that he was trying to generate media coverage of Hunter Biden’s laptop. Talk about dirty tricks.
Vanity Fair prompted the director, stating, “You specifically wanted the Borat sequel to come out in October so that it could have an impact on people before the election.” Of course with many of the movie’s scenes being derisive of conservative leaders and conservative politics, (and the timing of the release of the film right before election) it wasn’t hard to recognize the film’s political motivations.Vanity Fair asked, “Looking back now, do you think you were successful?”
Cohen claimed that he did his part in nuking the Hunter Biden controversy, claiming, “Probably the most successful element of it was that it discredited Rudy Giuliani on the day that he was trying to torpedo Biden’s campaign by delivering this hard drive that supposedly contained material on it that would have been negative for Biden.”
That infamous scene involved a heavily edited sequence intended to show Rudy Giuliani getting cozy with an underage woman in his private quarters, with Cohen’s undercover cameras picking up footage unbeknownst to Trump’s lawyer. Though plenty of skeptics thought that the footage didn’t offer any explicit proof of Giuliani committing lewd activity. Still Cohen said, “the Borat movie came out, and Giuliani, rather than being on the offensive, was on the defensive.”
The Borat star added, “I think the image of him on the bed with his hands down his trousers is not one you want from your top legal expert if you’re trying to undermine the largest election in history.” Oh yes, Cohen himself saved America from top autocratic thugs like Rudy and Trump. And to think American's didn’t think they needed the British involved anymore.
He made an even more conceited quip to the magazine saying, “I’m glad that I came out of the shadows. If I hadn’t done that and hadn’t made Borat and Chicago 7, I would have felt very uncomfortable looking in the mirror on November 4.”
In an interview with NPR from February 23, Cohen also characterized his film as a “multimillion-dollar contribution to Joe Biden’s presidential campaign.” He also provided justification for the movie-length political hit job, saying, “We did [the film] because there was a deeply unethical government in power. And there was no question. … We had to do what we could to inspire people to vote and remind people of the immorality of the government prior to the election.”
Cohen’s statements remind us of that one article from Time magazine from a couple weeks ago which bragged that literally every Democrat or left-leaning institution in America banded together to “fortify” the election. When even Borat is spending millions to prevent Democracy Dying in Darkness, you know the deck is stacked against you.
