Morning Joe's Cup Overflows for John Lewis: 'Christlike,' a 'Genuine Saint'

July 28th, 2020 9:35 AM

Secularism is a fundamental principle of the left. These are the people who, for example, fabricated the non-existent constitutional principle of "separation of church and state." And in 2008, Barack Obama infamously derided people who "cling" bitterly to their religion.

But as the election approaches, the left has apparently decided for its political purposes to embrace religion. Our Tim Graham has documented how the MSM is now portraying Joe Biden as deeply devout. And nary a week goes by that Nancy Pelosi doesn't flaunt her faith.

Morning Joe got into the spirit today. First, Joe Scarborough compared him to Jesus: "John Lewis was considered the conscience of Congress. He also was a Christian, who was Christ-like. You look at the Beatitudes, and so many of them apply to the life, day in and day out."

Jon Meacham upped the ante:

"You know, the secular and the sacred intersect in the Rotunda at moments like that. And Lewis was, in fact, I believe, a genuine saint, in the classic New Testament sense of the term."

Obviously, this ignores the usual Democrat voting behavior, like Lewis having a 100 percent record with NARAL Pro-Choice America. Because black lives matter?

This whole scenario seemed like a replay from last December when Scarborough suggested Pelosi was channeling Jesus and Meacham suggested she was a theologian:

SCARBOROUGH: This is a woman who is, she’s moved by faith. And by the way, her faith does not allow her do what so many Republicans faith allow them to do: turn a blind eye to little children dying in U.S. custody. Turn a blind eye to little children being locked up in cages . . . Ripping babies from mothers...Maybe James Rosen would like to ask Donald Trump, do you hate children, or do you hate Jesus?

MIKA: That’s a good question.

SCARBOROUGH: Do you not believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ, let the little children come?...

JON MEACHAM: Speaker Pelosi is the only American politician with whom I’ve had endless discussions about St. Augustine.

PS: And liberals, of course, often deride conservatives who offer their "thoughts and prayers."  Here, for example, is Dana Milbank of  the Washington Post denouncing  "thoughts and prayers" as a "cruel joke." But commenting on news that Herman Cain is on oxygen for treatment of COVID, Scarborough said:

"Our prayers, and our thoughts, are certainly with him."

Was Scarborough being sincere, or was there a hint of facetiousness in his remark? You be the judge.

Here's the transcript.

Joe Scarborough Jon Meacham Morning Joe 7-28-20JOE SCARBOROUGH: Obviously as Nancy [Pelosi] said, John Lewis was considered the conscience of Congress. He also was a Christian, who was Christ-like. You look at the Beatitudes, and so many of them apply to the life, day in and day out. For those of us who knew and loved John up close, those of us who only knew him from his public image, this was a man who always understood: blessed are the meek, blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Blessed are the peacemakers. John, he was all of that, and so much more. And how fitting that he was remembered the way he was yesterday in Washington DC.

JON MEACHAM: You know, the secular and the sacred intersect in the Rotunda at moments like that. And Lewis was, in fact, I believe, a genuine saint in the classic New Testament sense of the term.

. . .

SCARBOROUGH: We are seeing, again, as if we needed a reminder, of how just contagious Covid-19 is. And speaking of that, the president’s National Security Adviser has Covid —

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Can you believe that?

SCARBOROUGH: And we hear, right now, that Herman Cain is on oxygen, about a month after going to that Tulsa event. Our, our prayers and our thoughts are certainly with him.
