On Monday's Amanpour & Co. on PBS and CNN International, host Christiane Amanpour tried to prod her guest -- the European Commission's president, Doctor Ursula von der Leyen -- to bash President Donald Trump over his confused suggestion that doctors might treat coronavirus patients with disinfectants.
Doctor Leyen, who was appearing on the show to discuss a fundraising effort to help fight coronavirus, resisted being as negative toward Trump as Amanpour seemed to want.
Toward the end of the interview, the PBS host brought up Trump's comments, and posed:
You talked about data, and, of course, everybody wants facts and data right now, and people don't want conspiracy theories and guess work. Just as a doctor, I wonder what you thought when President Trump stood in front of the world and suggested people inject or somehow ingest disinfectant as a way to stave off coronavirus?
Instead of being directly critical of President Trump, Doctor Leyen responded: "Well, never ever do this. It can be dangerous, plain and simple. It can be deadly, and this is very clear, and I think this has been immediately said very clearly, and so these are things that I said are very, very dangerous."
Smiling, Amanpour followed up: "I can't push you to tell me how you react to the leader of the world's only superpower actually advocating that?"
Doctor Leyen resisted being more critical as she responded: "Well, as I said, you asked me about the fact, and the fact itself is that I think this is not something we should ever think of."
