Ahead of a U.S. appeals court in New Orleans hearing arguments in a Republican-led lawsuit against ObamaCare on Tuesday, the media scared viewers by warning that if the Affordable Care Act was deemed unconstitutional it “could wipe out coverage for millions of Americans.” Reporters therefore predicted that if ObamaCare was struck down it would cause the GOP to “lose big politically” in the 2020 election.
“In New Orleans today, 18 Republican-led states will make their case before an appeals court asking them to strike down ObamaCare....the practical and political implications here could be tremendous,” proclaimed correspondent Mary Bruce on ABC’s Good Morning America. She sounded the alarm: “If the law is struck down, well then that could wipe out coverage for millions of Americans, protections for people with pre-existing conditions...all of this could be in jeopardy.”
Turning to campaign politics, Bruce declared: “But, George, even if Republicans do win in the courts they could lose big politically because, as the President recently told you last month that his health care plan is coming sometime soon, George, right now Republicans do not have a plan to replace ObamaCare.” Co-host George Stephanopoulos added: “It will be front and center, 2020 campaign.”
During the 10:00 a.m. ET hour of CNN Newsroom, anchor Poppy Harlow melodramatically announced: “Health care coverage for millions of you on the line today.” She continued: “At stake, insurance for 20 million Americans, protection for people with preexisting conditions, subsidies for low income people and much more....this is a really, really big deal.”
On her 9:00 a.m. ET show on MSNBC, anchor Stephanie Ruhle saw doom for the GOP: “And while this may seem like a big win for Republicans, it could be a very risky move. Many Republicans are saying do not do this, putting an issue that has traditionally been a win for Democrats into the spotlight just as 2020 ramps up.”
Correspondent Garrett Haake followed up by snidely remarking:
...if you don’t believe that health care is important, go ask the Republican members of Congress sitting at home watching television on their couch today. It’s the number one reason why Democrats were able to take back control of the House in 2018 and recent polling, including our own, shows that it’s still the number one issue for voters across the country, particularly for Democratic voters.
The reporter lectured: “Look, folks don’t always love their health care, but on the flip side of that coin, what they really hate are efforts to take it away. And if that’s how voters see this lawsuit here, it could be big trouble for Republicans on ballots anywhere next year.”
Amazingly, none of the hyperbolic reports mentioned the fact that several leading 2020 Democratic presidential candidates have called for taking private health insurance away from all Americans in favor of socialist government-run health care schemes.
