CBS Hosts Laugh at Dumping Milkshakes on ‘Right-Wing’ Politicians: 'I’m Sure It Feels Great'

May 21st, 2019 11:59 AM

The journalists at CBS This Morning on Tuesday laughed at a new trend by militant leftists: Dumping milkshakes on politicians they don’t like. Co-host Tony Dokoupil began with a whimsical recounting: “In the latest of a series of attacks on right-wing politicians, Brexit Party Leader Nigel Farage was doused with a milkshake yesterday. That was actually salted caramel if anyone is wondering.”

This prompted laughter from Dokoupil’s co-hosts. Continuing the jovial discussion of political intimidation, he added, “I’m sure it feels great. I’m sure people love the feeling. Pictures fly around the world.”

Finally, Dokoupil got around to some mild chiding: “Put some of that energy into campaigning and maybe the people you don't want to be in office won't be in office.” Co-host Gayle King murmured agreement: “It seems like there’s a better way to do that.”

On Monday’s Late Show, host Seth Meyers also joked about the attack on Farage, making sure to note that “far-right” politicians are the target:

Police in Scotland have ordered a McDonalds location to stop selling milkshakes after multiple videos showing people throwing milkshakes at far-right politicians went viral. Said McDonalds customers, "That's insane. Their milkshake machine was actually working? What’s their secret?”

Imagine if 2020 Democrats like Bernie Sanders or Kamala Harris were the targets. Would they be identified as “left-wing” politicians? Would journalists find this all so amusing?

Over the weekend, the Twitter account for Burger King UK tweeted what sounded like support for the act of what's being called “milk shaking.”

TONY DOKOUPIL: Protesters in Britain have weaponized the milk shake. In the latest of a series of attacks on right-wing politicians, Brexit Party Leader Nigel Farage was doused with a milkshake yesterday. That was actually salted caramel if anyone is wondering. [Laughter.] He was campaigning. These attacks have come to be known as milk shaking. Now, this follows egging. It follows pieing, punching. I don’t know. I’m sure it feels great. I’m sure people love the feeling. Pictures fly around the world. Put some of that energy into campaigning and maybe the people you don't want to be in office won't be in office.

ANTHONY MASON: Maybe just drink the milkshake.

GAYLE KING: It seems like there’s a better way to do that.

DOKOUPIL: Police are asking places not to sell milkshakes.

MASON: That was really interesting. Around Edinburgh, they asked places around political appearances not to sell milkshakes.

KING: It seems like there is a better way to do that.
