On Friday's Cuomo Prime Time, CNN host Chris Cuomo finally addressed a couple of cases of Democratic party extremism on abortion as he defended New York's new law, supported by his brother, Governor Andrew Cuomo, that makes it easier to get late-term abortions, and he also decried the Republican-supported U.S. Senate bill against infanticide, calling it a "stunt" and "BS."
The issue was brought up by Donald Trump campaign member Rob Astorino in a debate with liberal CNN contributor and former Hillary Clinton campaign member Karen Finney when he pointed out that many conservatives support President Trump because he has acted in opposition to abortion.
Astorino recalled that Republicans are working against "an expansion of abortion" supported by Democrats, leading Finney to jump in and deny that such an "expansion" is happening. Astorino responded: "God, are you kidding me? Seriously? What happened in New York, what happens in Virginia, what's happening in Illinois --"
Downplaying the New York law's impact, Cuomo jumped in and confused Astroino with Rick Santorum as he responded: "The law in New York codifies Roe. You know that, Rick."
He then added: "I don't understand this. I mean, look, I get that that this is a touchy subject, and I get that people play to it different ways, but I don't understand why you say that it's anything more than codifying what's already the standard."
Cuomo seemed unaware of the argument that the new law defines the term "health" so vaguely that abortion doctors could easily abuse the definition of "health" to perform abortions for superficial reasons.
New York's change in law has also been blamed for making it so that domestic abusers of pregnant women would not be punished criminally specifically for causing the death of an unborn baby, thus helping them get lighter punishment.
Additionally, there is the argument that, in a late-term situation, there are not circumstances in which performing an abortion is better for the mother's health.
Cuomo soon dismissively added: Seems like a scare tactic to me. A lot of people stop me on the street and say, 'I didn't know that it was legal to kill a newborn baby. Why are you telling people that?"
He then brought up the Senate bill as he added: "Why do people believe that if a newborn baby -- a baby is born, a doctor can kill it unless the laws are changed? By that BS thing that Mitch McConnell brought up. Why would you want people to believe that?"
After Astorino wondered why Democrats did not just vote for it, Cuomo declared that they voted against it because it was a "stunt."
