On Wednesday afternoon, as MSNBC Live with Craig Melvin covered the story Mollie Tibbetts and reports that she was allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant, far-left MSNBC contributor Zerlina Maxwell misleadingly hinted that whites are more likely to commit violent crimes than illegal immigrants as she lamented that President Donald Trump has spoken about the case.
At 1:51 p.m. Eastern, after correspondent Ron Mott updated viewers on the case, Melvin turned to Maxwell -- his only guest that he had on to comment on the subject -- and posed:
We heard President Trump last night at that rally in West Virginia talk about this case as he's been prone to do -- talk about cases involving undocumented immigrants in this country. Is it reasonable to expect that this is a President who is going to continue to use this particular case to advance some sort of political agenda?
Maxwell complained that it is a "sad state of affairs" that President Trump "uses racial wedge issues to excite his base" and brought up the case of California resident Nia Wilson who was killed "allegedly by a white supremacist."
She then added:
So that's s different type of crime, but you didn't hear anything from the President. You didn't see anybody out talking about it in terms of it being a crisis that we needed to solve immediately, but white supremacist violence is actually up while undocumented immigrants commit fewer crimes than United States citizens.
In fact, NewsBusters has previously documented that whites tend to commit both homicides and hate crimes at a disproportionately low rate compared to their percentage of the population.
And studies have also contradicted claims by liberals that illegal immigrants have an unusually low crime rate.
