The press is protecting Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton from the true extent of the blowback over her expressed desire to see coal miners lose their jobs and her bogus attempt to "apologize" for what she said.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, appearing on Fox & Friends Thursday morning, identified a larger truth about Mrs. Clinton's callous disregard for workers and their families — people about whose well-being her party claims to be concerned:
Transcript (bolds are mine throughout this post):
HOST STEVE DOOCY: Newt, talking about Hillary, she's got a problem, as we head into the primary on the Democratic side in West Virginia.
A couple of weeks back in Ohio, she was talking about how, "You know, we're going to put a lot of coal miners out of work." And of course, there are a lot of coal miners in West Virginia, and it just seemed like a tone-deaf thing to say in the era of videotape.
NEWT GINGRICH: Well, every once in a while the mask slips, and you see how really frightening left-wing totalitarians are. She's described putting people out of work as though they were not people – as though they were numbers. She has no concern for their families, their church, or their neighborhood, or their local small government.
This is the kind of ruthlessness — and by the way, the EPA is going after the Navajo nation with a similar kind of zealotry. What you have are a group of left-wing fanatics who've don't mind who they ruin on the way through as long as they meet their ideological goals.
Gingrich is right in his side assertion about the Navajo nation. A story at the Daily Caller has reported that the "Navajo Nation (Is) In Crisis As EPA Tries To Shutter The West’s Largest Coal Plant."
As to Clinton's alleged "apology" for her previous remark about putting coal miners out of work, it really wasn't an apology at all, as Larry O'Connor at Hot Air demonstrated on Tuesday. Of course, the establishment press, in virtual lockstep, claims it was.
A Wednesday Investor's Business Daily editorial described what Mrs. Clinton now claims to want to do as the height of nonsense:
Now that she needs their vote, suddenly she’s presenting a plan to “help” coal miners — by giving them “clean” solar panel jobs. You mean like all those Solyndra jobs Hillary’s boss failed to create — at taxpayers’ expense?
President Obama’s Solyndra boondoggle cost taxpayers only about half a billion dollars. In the off chance Clinton could even retrain coal miners to make solar panels, the new jobs would be highly subsidized — and they still wouldn’t replace the top wages paid to skilled operators at coal mines.
So this is social engineering at its worst. Hillary might as well be saying: “I’m going to throw you out of work because I don’t like your industry, and I’m going to make you work for a politically correct industry that’s not economically feasible. But who cares, for this is the direction state central planners like me, in our infinite wisdom, decree the nation must go.”
West Virginians clearly aren't buying what Mrs. Clinton is now trying to sell — nor should they.
