Prior to Tuesday’s guilty verdict in the corruption trial of Democratic Senator Bob Menendez (NJ), the major broadcast networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC spent only nine minutes (8:56) on their flagship morning and evening newscasts and Sunday morning political talk shows. But by Tuesday night, they came out of the wilderness with six minutes of coverage (6:08).

It is said that although tonight’s official RNC ‘24 theme is “Make America Safe Once Again”, it subtheme is “Unity”. However, some in the media are lamenting this unity. 

Seth Meyers, NBC’s host of Late Night, solemnly reacted on Monday to the Saturday attempted assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump by appropriately denouncing political violence, but inappropriately blaming the situation on the lack of gun control in America and accusing Republicans of making things worse in the aftermath of the shooting.

On Monday morning, the White House correspondents on ABC, CBS, and NBC all eagerly played the role of unofficial Biden press aides by touting his Sunday night address to the nation as a plea to use the attempted assassination of Donald Trump as “an urgent plea...to cool down the political temperatures” and a task for Americans “to unite” by “restor[ing] civility”. 

CBS ran a news special on Sunday night after President Biden’s remarks in the Oval Office. CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell interviewed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and dragged him right back to January 6 to discuss how rhetoric has grown hotter. Typically, CBS didn’t include itself in the atmosphere of overheated rhetoric.

On Friday, CBS Mornings hosted Biden campaign surrogate Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna of California. However, Khanna at least acknowledging President Biden’s gaffes and pleas for Democrats to stick with Joe fell on deaf ears at the table.

CBS’s coverage of the aftermath of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has been awful throughout, but Chief White Correspondent Nancy Cordes may have just plumbed a new low.

CBS’s host of Face the Nation, Margaret Brennan, joined the network’s breaking coverage of Saturday’s assassination attempt of former President Trump at his Pennsylvania rally, where she was dismayed that a statement from campaign advisor Chris LaCivita might “escalate” Trump’s “us versus the system” rhetoric and that a statement from Trump himself didn’t lower “the temperature” even…

After repeated pushbacks, President Biden’s much-anticipated press conference did little Thursday night to change that his presidency and reelection chances remain in crisis, thanks to a pre-selected list of reporters who gingerly went about his cognitive impairment and, in some cases, strayed completely from the story that’s come to dominate the global body politic.
