Salon.com, one of the truly crazy websites of the Left, has called it quits after 31 years, lamenting “the business realities of independent digital journalism have changed profoundly over the years.” AP’s headline saluted it as “an early staple of internet discourse,” and they tenderly reported:
Salon, one of the early internet’s most influential websites that featured sharp voices and political and cultural journalism with a liberal sensibility, announced Thursday it would shut down after 31 years of publication.
The New York Times headline similarly celebrated this "online magazine" as a “pioneer of digital journalism.” Salon was an important stop for a number of liberal journalists, most notably Jake Tapper, who during his tenure there wrote a book on the 2000 election provocatively titled Down and Dirty. On page 11, he decried George W. Bush and "his Bob Jones University-visiting, Confederate flag-waving, itchy-death-row-trigger-finger-wiggling, South Carolina-racist-pandering cracker Texas ass."
NewsBusters has captured some truly bizarre leftist takes over the years. Here's a small sample:
“Stop Thanking the Troops for Me: No, They Don’t ‘Protect Our Freedoms!'” — Headline of Salon.com article by Justin Doolittle published on Veterans’ Day, November 11, 2013.
“Put a man in uniform, preferably a white man, give him a gun, and Americans will worship him. It is a particularly childish trait, of a childlike culture, that insists on anointing all active military members and police officers as ‘heroes’” — Salon writer David Masciotra, November 9, 2014.
“Would anyone truly mourn the holiday [Christmas] if we did without it? How maddening become the carols, how cloying the endlessly proffered Seasons’ Greetings, how depressing the relentless tidings of joy, how un-silent the night! And all this over what?...Once one grasps the untruth of Christianity, the whole societal edifice built to shelter believers from reality and impose their way of thinking and living on the rest of us should come tumbling down.” — The Atlantic contributing editor Jeffrey Taylor on Salon, December 22, 2014.
"Ben Carson and the anti-women’s choice movement imagine themselves as descendants of the Abolitionists who fought and died to bring down the slave regime in the United States and across the Black Atlantic. Reality, the facts, and history are often not kind to those who are possessed of such heavy and perverse delusions. Ben Carson and the other conservatives who want to limit women’s reproductive rights and control over their own bodies have more in common with the whites who ran the slave labor rape and charnel camps of the American South than they do with Abolitionists such as John Brown, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, David Walker, Sojourner Truth, or William Lloyd Garrison.” – Chauncey De Vega on Salon, October 25, 2016.
“The Second Amendment was designed to solidify the rights of white men to carry weapons, which were used to exterminate the indigenous population, hunt down enslaved people who escaped and crush uprisings.” -- Chris Hedges on Salon, June 7, 2022.
There's more where that came from. Seth Dillon of the Babylon Bee joked that these articles must have been satire:
Salon wrote some of the best satire we've ever seen. If these brilliant humorists couldn't keep the lights on, what does that mean for the rest of us? https://t.co/KLTBAM9DTb
