CBS on Hearing: Dems ‘Minimize Partisan Warfare’ vs. GOP ‘Food Fight’

July 27th, 2021 2:29 PM

On Tuesday morning, as CBS began it’s special coverage swooning over the Democrats’ stunt of holding a highly-politicized hearing into the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, anchor Major Garrett laughably claimed that the left-wing House lawmakers were simply searching for “facts” and trying to “minimize partisan warfare.” Moments later, Republicans were blamed for creating a “lunchroom food fight.”

“And yet, it seems as if there is a desire among the Democrats who are putting this committee together to try to get to the underlying facts and minimize partisan warfare, but Republicans want to continue that line of partisan attack. Is that the way it looks on Capitol Hill?,” Garrett remarked to Capitol Hill correspondent Kris Van Cleave.

Van Cleave promptly agreed with the pro-Democrat assessment: “Yeah, I mean certainly you have some toxic politics around this. The members of the committee all talk about trying to get to the truth.” Though he did at least briefly acknowledge that Democrats shared some of the blame in politicizing the hearing:

And of course, the Speaker has some hand in this, too. She dropped two of the Republicans that McCarthy had appointed. He then pulled all his Republicans off. And so now you have a panel that is weighted to the Democrats. So one of the challenges here will be trying to show that this is a credible, bipartisan effort.

However, the reporter wrapped up his analysis by attacking Republicans: “On the GOP side, it’s starting to feel a bit like a lunchroom food fight, Major.”

When the leftist media are crafting a narrative, Democrats are always portrayed as heroic public servants striving for truth while Republicans are tarred as the villains hurling their lunch across the cafeteria.

CBS’s live special coverage did not include any commercials, but you can fight back by contacting some of the biggest media advertisers.

Here is a transcript of the July 27 exchange:

MAJOR GARRETT: I want to bring in our congressional correspondent Kris Van Cleave, who joins us from Capitol Hill. It’s impossible at moment like this, Kris Van Cleave, to not have politics injected into it. And yet, it seems as if there is a desire among the Democrats who are putting this committee together to try to get to the underlying facts and minimize partisan warfare, but Republicans want to continue that line of partisan attack. Is that the way it looks on Capitol Hill?

KRIS VAN CLEAVE: Yeah, I mean certainly you have some toxic politics around this. The members of the committee all talk about trying to get to the truth. And you hear that from the Republican members – the two Republican members – and the seven Democratic members. You then hear from GOP leadership, Kevin McCarthy, who is – gave a press conference this morning spreading what are largely borderline debunked conspiracy theories trying to pivot the blame solely to Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, for January 6th and the security failures on January 6th.

And of course the wildcard here is what is former President Donald Trump do? Does he weigh in at some point? Because Republicans also have to balance what the former president thinks because that’s going to play into all of this as well. On the GOP side, it’s starting to feel a bit like a lunchroom food fight, Major.
