Meghan McCain Blasts Media, Joy Behar for Disrespecting Millions of Trump Voters

January 4th, 2021 3:54 PM

Conservative co-host Meghan McCain returned to Monday's The View to kick off the new year and was ready to ruffle her co-hosts’ feathers. While they ranted about President Trump continuing to contest the November election results, McCain irritated Joy Behar by pointing out that there were millions of Americans who voted for Trump and they deserved respect instead of contempt from the left.

The hosts were outraged by the President’s demand for Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) to “find 11,780 votes” to flip Georgia, in a phone call that was leaked to the media on Sunday. Sunny Hostin and Behar called it a “psychotic coup” and “treason,” and pushed for Democrats to impeach him again:

BEHAR: I'm wondering. If we have the 25th amendment because, you know, if you don't use it with him, when are they going to use it? When one flew over the cuckoo's nest? I mean, when are they going to use it? If they didn't impeach him before, and I guess they could still impeach him, I understand that if they impeach him again, he can't run for President again….

(...)

HOSTIN: ….listen to that tape of the call or at least read the transcript because what you have is the President of the united States asking the Georgia secretary of state to find votes, to steal an election, and to just really I think sabotage our democracy. That is not only criminal. It is psychotic in a sense, and --

BEHAR:  It's treasonous. It's treason.

HOSTIN: It's treasonous. It is treasonous.

WHOOPI: Yeah.

HOSTIN: He's trying to stage a coup….

But McCain pointed out to her co-hosts that many Republicans had concerns the election was “stolen.”

“I'm not surprised, but I will say he doesn't sound that different than a lot of Republicans I know. 72% of Republicans according to an NPR poll believe that the election was stolen and right now, my big takeaway from the election was the messenger failed, but the message worked,” she began.

As her co-hosts continued to vent this was a “coup” and Behar claimed "his people, whoever they are" were trying to disenfranchise black voters, McCain pushed back again. She reminded them that this election wasn’t a landslide in Biden’s favor and that the media and her progressive co-hosts should be respectful to the President’s supporters:

I'm just saying the rhetoric in the media needs to be more respectful of people -- of Trump voters and I think that's how we got to this place to begin with, and I think in 2021, we need to be respectful of the 70 million Americans that for whatever reason did not feel that they could in good faith, pull the trigger for President Biden and Vice President Harris.

Behar began to argue with her that the only reason why Trump had any supporters was because they all believed his lies. McCain immediately called her out for suggesting 70 million Americans were just a bunch of mindless lemmings:

BEHAR: I say a lot of them have been lied to. That's why they voted for him.

MCCAIN: I know, but I think that’s inaccurate, I think that's the perspective of Joy Behar with all due respect. I mean, I'm ensconced by conservatives and Republicans, and that's just not accurate. Just not accurate.

BEHAR: What did you say? You're talking so fast, I heard my name, but I don't know what you said about me.

MCCAIN: That's your perspective. It's the perspective of Joy Behar and, you know, you're a proud progressive leftist, but I am a proud conservative, and I think the idea that the only reason why people voted for President Trump in the last election is because they were lied to and they're morons who were just being fed information is not only disrespectful but wildly inaccurate --

BEHAR: I didn't say they were morons.

MCCAIN: To say that someone has been fed bad information and too dumb to think for themselves so they voted for Trump---?

BEHAR: Listen Meghan, the man has ---

Right before this exchange (and which abruptly ended in a cut to commercial), Whoopi Goldberg complained that Democrats lost four years ago and Trump supporters need to suck it up: “Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. We lost four years ago. Now, he's lost this year. You're not allowed to kvetch and poop all over this. This is not the American way. You don't always like who becomes president,” she lectured.

Hey, it only took the View four years to admit Clinton legitimately lost the 2016 election. The media’s Russian collusion conspiracy theorists now being outraged at President Trump denying the legitimacy of the election results is quite ironic.

SUNNY HOSTIN:  No. No problem. I wanted to echo what Joy is saying that in a sense if you listen to this call, and I encourage people to listen to it, he talks specifically about Fulton county. We know that Fulton county is about 43% African-American. So he's targeting that county in particular. Let's face it. This is 21st century voter suppression, and I learned that the White House called the Georgia secretary of state 18 times. 18 times.

WHOOPI: Mm-hmm.

HOSTIN: So we can't just say, this is an enraged guy. This is just somebody who is unhinged. During the call, he specifically says, I want this information. He is told that it is illegal for him to get this information. Then he asks that his lawyers be deputized so he can get the information. This is someone that knows what he is asking for is illegal, yet he continues to ask for it.

WHOOPI: Yep.

HOSTIN: I think that says that this is an intentional act.

WHOOPI: Oh, yes.

HOSTIN: That this is a criminal, intentional act to steal --

BEHAR: Absolutely.

HOSTIN: -- Dually, an election. It's a coup.

MEGHAN MCCAIN: I think that rhetoric is dangerous. I think saying we're going to have martial law and it's a coup -- I'm here in D.C. They're setting up for the inauguration right now. There's not going to be martial law, and things like that just scare people. Joy, to your point, who are these people? Who are these people are 70 million Americans that voted for Trump. Biden won, but he didn't win by any kind of the landslide that I for one thought he might have.

WHOOPI: But he won.

MCCAIN: He did, and it's fair and I don't disagree.

WHOOPI: I'm all for respect.

JOY BEHAR: Meghan, don't you think a lot of those people are watching Fox and getting their news from sources other than legitimate sources? C'mon. They're watching Fox.

[Cross-talk]

BEHAR: They’re being lied to! They’re being lied to!

WHOOPI: Stop. Stop. I can't hear anybody.

MCCAIN:  No. I just think -- I know people that quietly voted for Trump, that didn't want to be shamed. That don't want to be yelled at, that don't want to be called racist. I think when--

WHOOPI: And those are fine---

MCCAIN: It should not have been this close. The election should not have been this close. If you are President Biden right now --

WHOOPI: But it was--

MCCAIN: It was, but that's why President Trump is using the insanity that he is. Again, there's been no evidence to show that.

WHOOPI: He has lost. He has lost.

MCCAIN: Yes, he has lost.

WHOOPI: Every time they've gone in, they've lost, and in terms of respect, respect the people who voted for Biden and let him take his place, but because, you know, people always want respect, but they don't want to give it. You have to respect people who said we want this --

MCCAIN: I want to give it.

WHOOPI: I know you want to give it, but I'm talking about other folks who don't. They sit around. The 180 Republican senators who are going to disrupt -- Because they don't like the outcome. [cross-talk] This is the bitch of being in a democratic society. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. We lost four years ago. Now, he's lost this year. You're not allowed to kvetch and poop all over this. This is not the American way. You don't always like who becomes president.

BEHAR: Biden won by 8 million votes, Meghan. That's not close. That's a lot of people.

MCCAIN: But Joy, if you are so comfortable, then why is everyone so hysterical about what's happening in Georgia? I’m sorry but this is a very fractured country. It's very split. I thought it was going to be a bigger win--

BEHAR: I understand that.

MCCAIN: But the idea that it's, like, you know, I agree in the same way that I said to you, just because Hillary Clinton got technically more of the -- numeral votes and then -- sorry. Sloppy day. It's my first day back in three months, but lost in the electoral college-- I have been saying that to you. President Biden won or President-Elect Biden won in all these ways, but I’m just saying, we are a completely fractured country, and to write off, ‘I don't know who these people are that voted for Trump,’ It's 70 million Americans voted for President Trump.

MCCAIN: To say that someone has been fed bad information and too dumb to think for themselves so they voted for Trump---

BEHAR: Listen Meghan, the man has--

WHOOPI: We’ll be right back. I’m not playing with them. [CUTS TO COMMERCIAL]
