On Monday’s The View, the hosts briefly reacted to actor Robert De Niro’s unhinged bleep-worthy outburst against President Trump at last night’s Tony Awards ceremony. As usual, a liberal host praised the crude outburst against the president while Republican host Meghan McCain rightly noted the left’s hypocrisy on Trump and inflammatory rhetoric.
After playing the clip of De Niro saying “F**k Trump” and the standing ovation he received afterwards, host Whoopi Goldberg observed that while “a lot of people don’t like” when things get political at awards shows, the crowd loved it, garnering “one of the biggest rounds of applause” of the evening.
“I thought that crowd was just full of Canadians,” guest host Ana Navarro joked while co-host Sara Haines said she laughed at another joke made after the comment from De Niro.
Hosts Sunny Hostin and Meghan McCain were the only two at the table to give a real opinion on the matter.
As Hostin has defended liberal celebrity tirades against the president many times before, it should come as no surprise how she reacted to the display.
While she admitted that she didn’t “care” for the expletive, she commended De Niro for speaking his mind. “People are feeling strongly about politics today, and I think rightfully so,” she began. She went on to say she “appreciated” his outburst against the president.
“If that is the way De Niro chose to express that, and that is the way the crowd chose to receive it, I mean, this is still America!” she vented.
Hostin continued to praise the angry actor’s outburst. “You get to say what you want to say, you know, it's constitutional, and so I -- I appreciated that he felt strongly enough to make that statement,” she said, finishing her thoughts.
It seems fair to say, that Hostin would not be singing the praises of “constitutional rights” if a conservative actor or singer had done or said something even far less offensive against President Obama from the awards stage.
McCain was the only one at the table who came out swinging against De Niro’s choice of words, calling out the left for being hypocrites in complaining about Trump degrading the national discourse, citing Sam Bee and Bill Maher’s recent derogatory comments.
“I thought it was gross, and I think that when you are talking about how Trump is degrading our national discourse with his language, this is not the way to combat Trump,” she snarked. Calling out liberals like Samantha Bee and Bill Maher, she said the left needs to take a dose of its own medicine. “Turn on Fox News right now, and I'm sure this is on repeat. I'm telling you, t gets very tribal, and this is not the way to combat it,” McCain sighed.
She continued:
“If he [De Niro] had something to say about Trump, he is an eloquent, well-known actor and I'm sure he could say a lot of things about democracy and freedom at the top of the show that would have been effective,” McCain offered.
