NBC Ignores Kentucky Electing Anti-ObamaCare GOP Governor

November 4th, 2015 10:23 AM

On Tuesday, Kentucky voters elected Matt Bevin to be its next governor, only the second time a Republican has served this position in over 40 years, yet NBC’s Today completely ignored the story during its Wednesday morning broadcast.

ABC’s Good Morning America and CBS This Morning both offered news briefs highlighting the Tea Party candidate’s anti-ObamaCare platform, which helped the first-time elected official win over Democratic Attorney General Jack Conway.

In the first of two news briefs, CBS’s Norah O’Donnell highlighted Bevin’s “Christian conservative values” and his pledge to end Kentucky’s controversial Medicaid expansion under ObamaCare as well as his support for Kentucky clerk Kim Davis:

Kentucky voters have elected a Republican governor for just the second time in 44 years. Matt Bevin is a Christian conservative and Tea Party favorite who’s never held office. He promises to end a controversial policy that let hundreds of thousands of people sign up for Medicaid health benefits. He’s also a supporter of Kim Davis, the county clerk jailed for refusing to give marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

ABC’s Amy Robach offered up a similar news brief detailing Bevin’s historic win:

Well, results from elections across the country are streaming in this morning. For only the second time in 40 years, voters in Kentucky have elected a Republican governor. Tea Party favorite Matt Bevin campaigned against ObamaCare. He also supported county clerk Kim Davis in her battle against same-sex marriage licenses.

While both ABC and CBS covered Bevin’s win, CBS This Morning was the only network morning show to also mention that Kentucky elected an African American, who is also a Republican, to statewide office for the first time in state history:

The Courier Journal reports on history made in yesterday's race for Kentucky governor. Earlier we told you Republican Matt Bevin won. His running mate Lieutenant Governor-elect Jenean Hampton will become the first African-American to win statewide office in Kentucky. She is a retired Air Force officer.
