CNN Defends Democrats From Trump's 'Fearmongering' About France-Like Violence

October 20th, 2026 2:00 PM

CNN News Central host Sara Sidner and White House correspondent Alayna Treene teamed up on Tuesday to warn President Trump’s “darker rhetoric” and “fear mongering” as he urges people to vote Republican by warning that what is happening in France could happen here should Democrats win.

Treene began by noting that a Democratic-controlled Congress would be able to investigate him and block any legislative priorities. According to her, “That's why I think you're hearing the president use some of this darker rhetoric now while he is stomping for candidates in these different states and races. And it's similar to what we've seen him use in the past when he's been running on the trail for his own races, you know, using this kind of fear mongering to try and convince voters to turn out for his party.”

She then cued up a clip of Trump discussing the French riots, “I do want you to listen to the message he had last night, because he did argue that he believes that if Democrats were to take over, you would see different cities across America burn, just like we're seeing with these protests in Paris. Listen to how he put it.”

In the clip, Trump declared, “If you want to see what is at stake in this election, just look at what's happening in France. A once great nation that is being conquered, looted, and burned to the ground by migrants, jihadists, and communists who hate Christianity. And they hate, frankly, the Western Civilization itself… This is what's happening to France. They want to happen to our country. It's never happening here.”

On the other side of the clip, Treene continued, “So, Sara, clearly quite a stark portrait the president is trying to paint between what would happen if Republicans were to win versus Democrats.”

Sidner then stepped in to defend Democrats, “Yeah. And to be fair, no Democrat who was running or otherwise has said they want to burn America to the ground. So, there is that as well.”

And no French person is campaigning on burning France to the ground either. They just propose canceling nearly one-fifth of the country’s debt as the way out of its debt crisis in order to appease the rioters by funding more socialism. Additionally, the rioters want more government spending even though roughly 57 percent of France’s GDP is already tied up in government spending. In the U.S., far-left Democrats are running around touting how they want to enact several new and expensive government programs that will eventually lead this country into a debt crisis and leave future politicians where French politicians currently find themselves: stuck in the middle between socialist (and jihadi) agitators and bond investors.

ALAYNA TREENE: So that's why I think you're hearing the president use some of this darker rhetoric now while he is stomping for candidates in these different states and races. And it's similar to what we've seen him use in the past when he's been running on the trail for his own races, you know, using this kind of fear mongering to try and convince voters to turn out for his party.

I do want you to listen to the message he had last night, because he did argue that he believes that if Democrats were to take over, you would see different cities across America burn, just like we're seeing with these protests in Paris. Listen to how he put it.

DONALD TRUMP: If you want to see what is at stake in this election, just look at what's happening in France. A once great nation that is being conquered, looted, and burned to the ground by migrants, jihadists, and communists who hate Christianity. And they hate, frankly, the Western Civilization itself. [jump cut] This is what's happening to France. They want to happen to our country. It's never happening here.

TREENE: So, Sara, clearly quite a stark portrait the president is trying to paint between what would happen if Republicans were to win versus Democrats. He will be taking this message to North Carolina today, where he'll be stomping for the former Republican National Convention or Committee, excuse me, Chairman Michael Whatley, who's running against the former governor of this state, Roy Cooper.

SARA SIDNER: Yeah. And to be fair, no Democrat who was running or otherwise has said they want to burn America to the ground. So, there is that as well. This morning. Alayna Treene thank you so much for your reporting there from the White House.
